BayonettaandThe Wonderful 101director Hideki Kamiya announced in a tweet that he is leaving PlatinumGames on October 12, later this year; “This came after a lot of consideration based on my own beliefs, and was by no means an easy decision to make. However, I feel this outcome is for the best. I will continue to create in my Hideki Kamiya way. I hope you’ll keep your eyes peeled.”

PlatinumGames also shared a letter about Kamiya’s departure on its official Twitter account, “We are truly grateful for his creative ideas, leadership, and contribution to the growth of PlatinumGames from our start-up to this very day. We believe that he will continue to succeed in his future endeavours as a game creator. We are looking forward to seeing the game industry grow into a better place with him in it. We wish him all the best for the future!”

Kamiya co-created PlatinumGames, then called Seeds Inc., in 2007 withShinji Mikami, Tatsuya Minami, and Atsushi Inaba. He’s been with the company for 16 years, currently serving as vice president, but you’ll almost certainly know his earlier work. He started his career at Capcom where he was known for directingResident Evil 2andDevil May Cry. He even worked on the very first Resident Evil game alongside Mikami. What he’ll do next is anyone’s guess, but based on PlatinumGames and his own statements, it’s clear he isn’t done making games yet.

Hideki Kamiya was promoted to VP of PlatinumGames last year, but he is alsothe director of Project G.G., a new superhero game completing Kamiya’s trilogy after Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101.

Last July, he said that the scope had “expanded greatly”, but we haven’t seen a trailer since 2020. This vague teaser showed us a brief glimpse at the hero growing to the size of a skyscraper to face off with a giant monster in a Kaiju-like fight. It’s unclear what will happen to Project G.G. now that Kamiya has left PlatinumGames.

With Kamiya’s departure, only one of the original four founders remains at PlatinumGames, Atsushi Inaba, who is currently president and CEO.

Minami left in 2016 and Mikami left much longer ago in 2010 to form Tango Gameworks where he developed Resident Evil’s spiritual successor The Evil Within. He left Tango Gameworks and Xbox recently, and like Kamiya, it’s unclear what he will do next.
