Summary

Doctor Who is a set a part ofMagic: The Gathering’sUniverse Beyond product line which features cards based on characters and worlds from other intellectual properties. For Doctor Who, this came in the way of four unique pre-constructed Commander decks.

Blast From The Past is one of these, featuring cards based on the original run of the show, including the First through Eigth Doctors. The deck has a historic theme, so there are plenty of powerful cards in the legendary, Sagas, and artifact departments. There are plenty of new, powerful cards in the decklists that are sure to make a splash in the format.

MTG Peri Brown card and art background

10Peri Brown

Peri Brown is fantastic and can help you to cast large historic spells without needing to tap lands.Convoke is a fantastic abilityand can turn all of your creatures into mana dorks for a legendary spell. Notably, tapping a creature for a convoke ability doesn’t require them to not have summoning sickness, so creatures can start being convoked right away.

Peri Brown is one of the many creatures with Doctor’s companion, so in decks built around historic spells like Blast From The Past, it is a fantastic inclusion as a partner or in the 99.

MTG Displaced DInosaurs card and art background

9Displaced Dinosaurs

Although Displaced Dinosaurs has a hefty mana cost, if it hits the battlefield it becomes amazing. It turns any historic permanent into 7/7 Dinosaurs while keeping their effects and abilities. In dedicated artifact decks, it turns all your cheap spells into 7/7 which can flood the battlefield fast.

Since Blast From The Past is built around historic spells, it is a giant boost to the power of the deck as 7/7 is a fantastic stat line to give your weaker creatures to make them amazing blockers and attackers.

MTG Vrestin, Menoptra Leader card and art background

8Vrestin, Menoptra Leader

Vrestin, Menoptra Leader doesn’t play into the historic theme that Blast From The Past has, but it’s a fantastic card on its own. It is one of the best cards when it comes to decks built around the Insect type, and can make them rapidly grow with each attack.

Not only does Vrestin give a boost to Insects, it comes with an army of Alien Insect tokens when it enters the battlefield that Vrestin’s effect plays into to make a plethora of strong creatures with flying. While it’s not great in the pre-constructed deck, Vrestin, Menoptra Leader is a great commander to play in a separate one.

MTG Ace, Fearless Rebel card and art background

7Ace, Fearless Rebel

Ace, Fearless Rebel goes great in a deck built around artifacts and fight spells. It can sacrifice an artifact which can play into ones that want to be sacrificed for value to let her fight any creature another player controls.

Ace can quickly startgrowing with +1/+1 countersthanks to its effect and can hit the battlefield rather early. If you have ways to give Ace protection, you can ensure that the combat won’t kill it in the process so you can keep taking advantage of the effect.

MTG Tegan Jovanka card and art background

6Tegan Jovanka

Tegan Jovanka is a phenomenal card for a historic creature. It’ll give a boost to an attacking historic creature and give it a small stat boost and protection. Notably, Tegan Jovanka doesn’t have to attack for this effect to trigger, it triggers whenever you attack with any creature.

If you have a historic creature with effects that trigger when they attack, Tegan Jovanka can ensure that they won’t die in combat thanks to indestructible. If you’re playing a deckthat puts a lot of resources into one legendary creature, Tegan is another way to make combat much safer.

MTG Reverse The Polarity card and art background

5Reverse The Polarity

Counterspells that cost three mana need a lot of strength to be playable, and Reverse The Polarity fits this description. It can counter all other spells, so if it is the last spell on a stack you can use Reverse The Polarity to ensure none of those spells ever resolve. Though the effect to switch power and toughness isn’t amazing, making all creatures unblockable is fantastic.

The utility that Reverse The Polarity has is what makes it so strong. There are plenty of situations where one of its effects will come into play to rarely make it a dead card in your hand.

MTG K-9 Mark I card and art background

4K-9 Mark I

K-9, Mark I is a fantastic assist tool for legendary creatures depending on if it’s tapped or untapped. It will give slight protection to your other legendary creatures if its untapped or can tap itself to ensure a legendary creature can get in for damage.

Though the effects are fairly simple, its strength comes from its mana cost. K-9, Mark I can hit the battlefield on the very first turn. Though its only ward one, that effect can get annoying to deal with, especially since its given to all your other legendaries, not just one.

MTG The Sixth Doctor card and art background

3The Sixth Doctor

The Sixth Doctor has a rather simple effect, it’ll copy the first historic spell you cast its turn. As an added bonus, legendary spell copies aren’t legendary, allowing you to get double effects from your best legendary creatures.

There are no shortages of powerful historic spells, allowing for The Sixth Doctor to get out of hand rather quickly. If you have ways to give cards flash, The Sixth Doctor’s effect applies for each turn, not just your own, so you’re able to take full advantage of it on everyone’s turn, not just your own.

MTG Sonic Screwdriver card and art background

2Sonic Screwdriver

For a mana rock that costs three mana, its effects have to be strong to fit into a playable slot. Luckily, Sonic Screwdriver is one of the best mana rocks that have a mana value of three. It has four separate effects, all of which are fantastic.

Untapping a utility artifact with a powerful effect for just one mana is great, as is scrying to verify you don’t draw into a dead card. Finally, making a creature unblockable is very strong, especially in Blast From The Past since there are a lot of powerful creatures with effects that trigger when they attack.

MTG The Third Doctor card and art background

1The Third Doctor

The Third Doctor is the best Doctor from the lot included in Blast From The Past. It can grow to incredibly high stats with the various tokens you can create. Although it doesn’t get a boost from noncreature tokens, there are so many ways to produce other tokens that this restriction will hardly do much to keep The Third Doctor’s stats down.

It even comes to the battlefield with a Clue, Food, or Treasure token to immediately make it a 3/3. If you pair it with a Doctor’s companion in red, you get access to a plethora of Treasure-produce cards and payoffs to make it that much stronger.
