Based on the rich and deep universe ofDungeons & Dragons,Larian Studioshad many choices regarding which species you could choose. While Larian may not feel the need to add more playable species to the game, a few beloved ones would be a welcome addition to any future sequels or DLC.

10Goliath

Across any fantasy story, not just video games, one of the stable creatures is giants. From the Elder Scrolls to Lord of the Rings, giants can come in different shades and styles, but they all usually share one community. They’re tall.

While Dungeons & Dragons has its own version of giants for you to battle, there are alsothe goliaths, a species of mountain-dwelling recluses. Goliaths prove their name is pretty fitting, averaging seven to eight feet and around three hundred pounds.

9Firbolg

What’s great about Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dungeons & Dragons in general is the inclusion of sub-species. Why limit you to just being an orc or an elf when you can be a half-elf or a half-orc?

One of the more exotic sub-species in Dungeons & Dragons is the firbolg. Unlike the goliaths, firbolg are much more keen on magic thanks to their fay orientation. They also are half-giant, so expect the average firbolg to be quite the specimen.

8Arakocra

It’s an age-old wonder: What would it be like to fly? Thankfully, there are many options in Dungeons & Dragons should you want to take to the sky. One of the primary flying species of the Dungeons & Dragons universe is the Aarakocra.

While giving Baldur’s Gate 3 players consistent access to flight could mess with the finely tuned combat. At the same time, it also opens up a wide range of gameplay options, something Larian is so good at implementing.

7Eladrin

Elves are one commonality across nearly every slice of fantasy medium out there. In many IPs, elves are as widespread as humanity is. In Dungeons & Dragons, elves possess various sub-species, allowing even greater player freedom.

One of the most popular eleven sub-speciesis the eladrin. Originating from the realm of Feywild, elardins possess a great affinity with magic, allowing them to travel between different planes easily. Elardins are also attuned to beauty and nature, making them one of the more graceful species.

6Minotaur

Sometimes, all you want to do is be a monster. While real life isn’t the place for that mindset, video games are perfect. Larian seems to understand the “evil playthrough” idea by including the Dark Urge origin character in Baldur’s Gate 3.

The minotaur is arguably the most monstrous and vicious of all the playable species in Dungeons & Dragons. These towering horned brutes are definitely not to be messed with, and having one in your party would probably do wonders at deterring would-be bandits.

5Genasi

In Dungeons & Dragons, one isn’t limited to just a single realm. There are several unique planes of existence, which all vary widely from each other in terms of environment and lifeforms. As such, different species can come directly from another realm.

Whilethe genasiaren’t technically a species, their classification is large enough for them to be a playable species. Most genasi were humans who touched another plane of existence, alerting their look and biology. Their appearance can also change based on their homeland.

4Aasimar

In Dungeons & Dragons, heaven and hell aren’t just concepts. They’re real places with their own history and civilizations. As we’ve seen with the tieflings, it’s not uncommon for someone living in hell to look for a place with a little more green.

The aasimar are, in many ways, the opposite of the tieflings. What were once humans have become champions of Mount Celestia, a divine realm built on the principles of lawfulness. As such, aasimar carries those ideals and the power to enforce them.

3Warforged

Before Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian releasedDivinity Original Sin 2. Larian might’ve taken inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons, but Larian’s spin on the fantasy setting was wholly unique. Yet in Dungeons & Dragons, several species seem at home in the Divinity series.

Debuting in the third edition for the Eberron setting, the warforged are sentient constructs made by the mighty Giants of Xen’drik. With their excellent design and unique abilities, the warforged would be a great inclusion in Baldur’s Gate 3 collection of species.

2Lizardfolk

Many of the species in Dungeons & Dragons are humanoid versions of real-life animals. You got humanoid lions, hippos, insects, and even turtles. While all of these species are great and would be worthwhile additions to Baldur’s Gate 3,the lizardfolkare definitely one of the best.

Living in the swamplands far from population centers, the lizardfolk are cold-blooded creatures who are highly protective of their territory. Ruthless and coming in eclectic colors, the lizardfolk would be a fine addition to Baldur’s Gate 3.

1Changeling

What has made Lairan’s RPGs stand out from the competition is the level of freedom they give the players. Larian’s game design never limits you to a couple of specific ways to solve a problem; it gives you the tools to develop your unique solution.

One Dungeons & Dragons species that would be perfect for Baldur’s Gate 3 isthe changeling. The ability to change into any species anytime you want opens up an immense amount of fun gameplay and problem-solving possibilities.
