Summary

There are plenty of universal constants in the world ofFinal Fantasy, which are dogs. The best four-legged companions any adventurer or hero could ask for in their quest against evil, dogs can be found in many of the main Final Fantasy titles as well as the side games.

As enemies and allies, there are tons of dogs to befriend and pet across the many worlds where the games take place. All dogs are the best dogs in Final Fantasy, but we had to rank them somehow, and these are some of the best the series has to offer.

Final Fantasy 10 Yuna and Daigoro

Note: Keep in mind that Red XIII isn’t a dog. While his direct species is an unnamed mammal, he is constantly described as having feline-like features despite being called dog-like several times in the games.

7Daigoro - Final Fantasy 10

Hidden as a secret summon apart from the main aeons that Yuna can find, Daigoro is the loyal dog of the summon Yojimbo. This summon can only be found in the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth, possibly having been hidden away by people of Spira who arelooking to disrupt the pilgrimagethat is used to stop Sin.

As the loyal hound of Yojimbo, Daigoro is seen first when players summon Yojimbo, running up to Yuna for pets and snuggles, distracting Yuna while Yojimbo walks out from behind a tree. In battle, if Yuna does not pay Yojimbo enough gil, he will be disappointed and set Daigoro out to attack your enemies with his weakest attack to match your paltry payment.

Final Fantasy 15 Umbra

6Umbra - Final Fantasy 15

One of two main dogs from Final Fantasy 15, Umbra is the faithful servant and friend of Lunafreya Nox Fleurent, the former princess of Tenebrae before her kingdom was invaded by the Niflheim Empire. Technically, though Umbra comes in the form of a dog, he is actually a Messenger of the Astrals, the gods of Final Fantasy 15. Thanks to this otherworldly power, Umbra can traverse the world in seconds, which Lunafreya and Noctis use to pass notes to each other throughout their childhood.

Umbra is adorned with white streaks across his muzzle and body parts, which are sometimes depicted as more grey or brown in other adaptations. Since he’s the two love birds' little messenger, he wears a little sling to carry notebooks between Luna and Noctis. Oddly enough, Umbra had a cameo in one of the trailers for Assassin’s Creed Origins, as the studio that created the trailer also worked on a project for Final Fantasy 15.

Final Fantasy 15 Pyrna

5Pryna - Final Fantasy 15

Sister to Umbra, friend of Lunafreya, and messenger to the Astrals themselves, Pryna is a cute puppy that has had a bit of a rough time in the world of Final Fantasy 15 and is also something of a catalyst for many of the friendships made in the game. As a puppy, Pryna was injured in an accident while bringing Noctis a message; Prompto then rescued her and became friends with Noctis.

Pyrna is associated with premonitions, visions, and dreams, oftentimes bringing warnings of the future, giving multiple characters visions throughout the game. While Pyrnahas a more tragic ending than her brother, she still is a very good girl.

Final Fantasy 8 Angelo the Dog Cannon

4Angelo - Final Fantasy 8

Rinoa’s friend and pet in Final Fantasy 8, this pupper’s full name is Sant' Angelo di Roma, a distinguished name for such a unique dog. Rinoa has had Angelo since she was a puppy, adopting her from a pet shop when she was young.

Angelo will help Rinoa in combat, jumping in during battles to attack, heal allies, and even discover items for you while exploring. Angelo can even be used as a dog cannon with Rinoa’s Combine Limit Break. Rinoa affixes Angelo to her arm with some sort of dog-launching device and fires the dog at her enemies, dealing damage to everything on the battlefield.

Final Fantasy 6 Interceptor and Shadow

3Interceptor - Final Fantasy 6

The fiercely loyal Interceptor closely resembles a Doberman Pinscher and is Shadow’s constant companion and one of the few beings that Shadow trusts. Shadow has trained Interceptor to attack at his command and even claims that the dog is so protective that it will attack strangers he doesn’t like, but that seems to be a bit of hyperbole since it never happens in the game. Shadow seems to care about no one else but Interceptor, being particularly attentive to his needs and care throughout the game.

In combat, Interceptor will live up to his name by jumping in front of Shadow to block incoming attacks, though only physical attacks. He does have a chance to counterattack, making him the perfect companion for Shadow while on their adventures.

Final Fantasy 14 THE MEGASHIBA

2Megashiba - Final Fantasy 14

Look at this handsome pup; they’re huge! The Megashiba isn’t a playable character; it’sa mount players can purchase for their characterto ride, but that doesn’t make it any less adorable. The lore behind the Megashiba is that it is a miniature Far Eastern dog who stopped being miniature by growing to be larger than a person.

The Megashiba prances around when it walks and, surprisingly, flies. It’ll run on the air when you first take off but then rest its little legs once it grows tired, coasting on its mysterious flying ability until you land.

Final Fantasy 16 Torgal As A Pupp

1Torgal - Final Fantasy 16

More than just a dog, Torgal is the loyal companion of Clive. As a puppy, Torgal is a grey little bundle of fur who is loveable, curious, and mischievous. After some time passes and the little Torgal grows up, he becomes a fiercely protective, lovable, and mischievous large wolf. Torgal isn’t just a regular dog either; it is later revealed that he is a frost wolf, capable of imprinting on Dominants and gaining powers thanks to their aether.

When he activates his powers, Torgal takes on a more fantastical appearance, with his fur glowing blue and armored, while taking on a fiercer look. Torgal remains Clive’s friend even after being separated for years, making him a very good boy indeed.
