There are plenty of facets to RPG games that are tenets to the genre. Weird loot, overpowered bosses, a heroic quest-line, and plenty of skills to shake a stick at.

What happens though when you take a skill that you can’t find use for? When you want to be a berserker instead of the famed stealth archer? For those moments, you’ll want to respec your character. Not every RPG has that option though. Here are some games though, that do have that extra bit of comfort.

10Borderlands

TheBorderlandsseries has always been good at balancing ease of play with a fun FPS-meets-RPG experience.

It doesn’t skimp when it comes to respec, allowing you to do so across any game in the series remarkably easily. It’s a great tool when you find yourself diving down a section of a vault hunter’s skill tree you regret.

As you explore, learn what you are good at, and find new weapons; respec-ing your character becomes more and more valuable. This is great when you start reaching the soft caps of certain skills.

8Divinity Original Sin 2

Throughout the RPG world, there are few games that have as open-ended respec abilities asDivinity Original Sin 2does.

Using magic mirrors at either Fort Joy or, after Act 2, The Lady o' War, you can respec your character to your heart’s content. That means while you may have started the game with high hopes of being the Elven Ranger of your dreams, you can finish it slinging spells as a Wizard or even swinging the heavy sword of a knight around.

7The Witcher 3

Life as Geralt of Rivia isn’t an easy one. Monsters, monstrous people, a protégé who may be the chosen one, and not to mention plenty of romances. Life is never simple for him.

Thankfully, after purchasing a Potion Of Clearance inThe Witcher 3, being stuck with skills that you don’t want anymore isn’t a problem Geralt has to deal with. They are hard to come by, so don’t think you’re able to just chug them at any time, but they’re around for those few just-in-case moments. Now about all those other problems…

6Mass Effect

TheMass Effectseries is a go-to when people talk about epic space adventure RPGs. Thankfully, Commander Shepherd and Pathfinder Ryder have the ability to respec when going on their respective quests.

Respec-ing on any of the games is usually as simple as going to your ship and finding the appropriate terminal (usually in the med-bay or research wing). This allows for nearly on-the-fly changes to your character archetype that allow for a much more dynamic playthrough when dealing with new challenges.

5Diablo 4

The world ofDiablo 4is a grim one to be sure. Thankfully though, respec-ing your character is one of the easiest things in the game.

On your various journeys throughout Sanctuary, and especially during your fights against Lilith’s minions, to respec your character all you have to do is go to your skill tree and begin removing and re-allocating points as you see fit. It’s a pretty easy system, and one that lets you play around with your class’s abilities on the fly.

4Lords Of The Fallen

A crusade, a demonic god, and plenty of horrific fantasy monsters; you’ll definitely want the option to respec at some point during Lords Of The Fallen.

This game has one of the stricter respec systems out there, but it does allow for it. After a little hunting, and a pretty early boss battle, you’ll acquire the Shard Of Heroes.

Once you have that, you can take it to a statue to respec your character. But, only once per game. So from there if you still don’t like your character it may be a good idea to start from square one.

3Kingdoms Of Amalur: Re-Reckoning

After being resurrected inKingdoms Of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, one may have the inclination to reinvent themselves as a warrior.

With the help of the Fateweaver and a pocketful of gold, you can do so rather easily. This makes your journey across Amalur and its collected realms a little bit easier for you, and you’ll definitely need any peace of mind you can get when attempting to beat Tirnoch. It’s not like the fate of the world rests in your hands or anything…

2Fallout 76

TheFalloutseries has usually not been one for allowing characters to respec. Their perk system and S.P.E.C.I.A.L. skill set is one-and-done for the most part.

Except where Fallout 76 is concerned. It doesn’t approach this facet of RPGs the same way most do, instead you can find, or build, a perk card machine. Here you can pre-make perk loadouts. It’s not a complete respec of your character, but perk cards do the heavy lifting where you abilities and skills are concerned so in essence it’s the same.

1Dragon Age: Inquisition

TheDragon Agegames are some of the biggest names in thefantasy RPG genre, and for good reason. Dragon Age: Inquisition is no exception to that rule.

Thanks to the Tactician’s Renewal, you won’t be stuck with a skill that you have buyer’s remorse about as long as you have the gold to buy it anyway. This makes a big difference when trying to save Thedas from the clutches of Corypheus.
