CD Projekt Red is partnering with Anonymous Content, known for producing films such as The Revenant and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and series such as True Detective and Mr. Robot, to develop a live-actionCyberpunk 2077project.
While details are scarce right now, this project appears to be a TV show given that CDPR is working directly with Anonymous Content Studios' head of television Garret Kemble, as well as chief creative officer David Levine who previously worked as HBO’s EVP and co-head of drama. He oversaw series like True Detective, Westworld, and Game of Thrones. It’s also being helmed by AC Studios which is known for series such as Saint X, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Time Bandits, and Disclaimer.
“The new project is at an early development stage and has currently commenced searching for a screenwriter to tell a brand-new story set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077,” CDPR wrote in a news post. “The project will be developed in close collaboration with the Cyberpunk 2077 creative team.”
This isn’t the first time CD Projekt Red has expanded on the world of Cyberpunk 2077. On top of a series of comics, it released a Netflix anime series called Edgerunners in collaboration with Studio Trigger, and earlier this year, it released a novel written by Rafal Kosik called NO_COINCIDENCE. Like the show, comics, and novel, this new live-action project will expand on the world rather than adapting the game as we’ve seen with recent series such asThe Last of Us.
The Witchergames followed on from the novels, which were later adapted into a live-action series by Netflix, but Cyberpunk 2077 has its roots in gaming. It’s set in the world of Mike Pondsmith’s 1988 TTRPG, ‘Cyberpunk’, more commonly known as Cyberpunk 2020 or Red. Interestingly, 2077 wasn’t the first video game in its world. In 2007, Mayhem Studio released a 2D platformer called The Arasaka’s Plot, in which you took on the role of Sam Gibson. Going by Edgerunners and CDPR’s other adaptations, we’ll likely meet a new character to follow in this live-action project.
We’ll have to wait and see what comes of this new project. In the meantime, CDPR just released the 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty DLC starringIdris Elba. These are the"last big updates"for the game as CDPR moves onto more Witcher projects and Cyberpunk 2, currently titled Project Orion. Clearly, CDPR has high hopes for this world and the stories it can tell within it, both in its own games and through other mediums.
