There are dozens of opportunities to earn Inspiration inBaldur’s Gate 3, from helping people to hurting them. While many Background Goals offer you an even blend of both good and evil choices, the Haunted One is a unique background that will have you skirting the line of morally gray at best.
The ability to chart your own course and decide your fate leaves many choices on the table. While many will choose to save the day as a hero, the Dark Urge struggles with their violent past. Earning Inspiration is derived from this mysterious history, though it’s possible to come out a hero in the end.
What Is The Haunted One Background?
The Haunted One is aunique background only available when you play as the Dark Urgewhen creating a new character. Unlike other backgrounds, this one is much darker andyour villainous actions are rewardedwith Inspiration.
While making your own character allows you to create your own history, theHaunted One comes with its own subplotfor you to follow (and ultimately decide the fate of). You’ve forgotten your past, but arehounded by an insatiable bloodlust.
You gainproficiency with Medicine and Intimidation checksthanks to your unique Background, as well asunique dialogue options and actionsthat can only be made as the Dark Urge.
Playing as the Dark Urgedoesn’t make you an inherently evil character, nor does it lock you out of a “good” ending. However, the actions you take will affect the world around you.
Your choices also influence how much Inspiration you’ll gain.
Many of yourBackground Goals will come from violence and bloodshed, though there are a handful of ways to earn Inspiration byresisting your Dark Urges.
How To Gain Inspiration As The Dark Urge
As the Dark Urge, your background is unique. Rather than earning Inspiration by saving people or being devious, you’llearn Inspiration by being cruel and ruthless.
While there are opportunities to earn Inspiration byresisting your Dark Urges, it’s more beneficial to embrace them at times if you need additional Inspiration. Plus, what’s the fun of playing the Dark Urge if you don’tgive in to itnow and then?
Many of the Dark Urge’sBackground Goals will have spoilersfor not only Baldur’s Gate 3, but the Dark Urge itself.

Recruit the ogre mercenaries, using the corpses of your enemies as payment.

Not all Inspiration can be obtained in a single playthrough, so you will need to make choices that will cut out the possibility for some options. For example, you can’t side with both the tieflings and the goblins in Act One. You’ll have to pick one side or the other.
Choosing toembrace your Dark Urgeas the Haunted One more often than notleads to great rewardsstory-wise. It’s a dark path, but it’s worth exploring if you’ve already played a good-aligned character.
As the Haunted One, you’ll havemore opportunities to earn Inspirationsince many Background Goals revolve around violent acts or combat. This will allow you tointimidate almost anyone, should you fail an Ability Check, andquickly regain any spent Inspiration.
Certain party members, like Wyll and Karlach,will not stick aroundif you turn against the tieflings. Not only will you have to decide how to play your Dark Urge character, butwho you can trustto accompany you.
Best Ways To Use Inspiration
Since the Dark Urge is aone-of-a-kind background(and only one can be present at a time, even in multiplayer), you’ll want todiversify your partywith characters that have similar interests.
Bringing good-aligned characters that prefer acts of kindness, such as Gale and Halsin, may be difficult, but not impossible. Instead, characters likeAstarion, the rogue, andShadowheart, the cleric, are faithful companions that willindulge your Dark Urgesnow and then.
Once you have Inspiration, you can use it toreroll failed Ability Checks, which is especially useful foravoiding combat or succeeding in unique dialogue options.
You can hold up to four Inspiration at any given time. Additional Inspiration will be converted into experience.
