During the Meta Quest 2’s life, one of the most controversial changes was the decision in 2020 to require everybody log in with a Facebook profile.
With the launch of theMeta Quest 3, a question many people interested in picking up the virtual reality headset have been asking is whether you still need to use Facebook to log in to play your games, or if there’s another way to get stuck in?

Do You Need A Facebook Account To Use The Meta Quest 3?
The short answer isno, you no longer need a Facebook account to use any Meta Quest headset, including the Meta Quest 3.
Facebook accounts haven’t been required to use Meta Quest headsets since August 2022. Instead, you can now log in with a newMeta accountthat is completely separate from your Facebook profile. This is the account that all your purchases on the Quest will be tied to, instead of your Facebook account.

I Already Bought Games On My Facebook Account, Can I Transfer Them To Meta?
When you turn on your Quest 2 or 3 headset, or log in to the app, you’ll be promptedto log in with a Meta account. If you don’t have one already, you canmigrate an existing Facebook profile to Meta.
Your Facebook profile will remain active, but all your VR-related activities, purchases, and friends will be transferred over to a new Meta account instead. Alternatively, you cansimply make a new Meta account and start fresh, though doing this will mean you lose all the games you may have bought for the Quest while it was under the Facebook account system.

Why Did Meta Quest Headsets Stop Using Facebook Accounts?
When the decision torequire Facebook logins was announced in 2020, Meta received major backlash from the VR community. At the time, Facebook’s image was still heavily damaged bythe Cambridge Analytica scandal, which saw Facebook user data acquired and used by the political consultancy firm.
Tying your VR activity, including your purchases and gameplay, with your Facebook friends wasn’t popular with users, and it was pointed out that being banned on Facebook could result in your losing access to all of your Quest and Oculus purchases.

Are Meta Accounts Safer Than Facebook?
It’s worth remembering that, at its core, Meta is still the same company now that it was in 2020. You’re still entrusting the same data you were before, includingusage information and purchase history, to Meta.
However, the decision to decouple Facebook and Meta accounts does meanall your data isn’t being kept under one account, making it inherently less invasive than before. It is your decision whether you decide to use Meta accounts, however note youwon’t be able to use a Meta Quest 3 without a Meta account.
