The Depths beneath Hyrule can be pretty intimidating when you begin playingThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom! It’s pitch black down there, and with so many horrors hiding in the dark, you’ll want better light than just yourBrightbloom Seedsbefore too long.

Thankfully, there are Lightroots in Tears of the Kingdom that illuminate the darkness and unveil the map of The Depths little by little with each Lightroot you unlock. In our guide, we’ve got every Lightroot location in TOTK, complete with exact coordinates and location notes for all 120 Lightroots in Tears of the Kingdom.
This guide contains spoilers for Tears of the Kingdom.
What Is A Lightroot?
When playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you’reintroduced to Lightrootsas soon as youventure into The Depths, which is likely when you’re headed down tofollow Robbie to receive the Camera.
Lightroots can be activated to illuminate the darkness in The Depths. Once a Lightroot is activated, thearea that Lightroot covers is unveiled on your map of The Depths.

Until this point, you’ll beusing Brightblooms to navigate, and these are still helpful for darker nooks and crannies, butactivating Lightroots is like turning on an overhead light.
Not only do Lightroots activate the map and illumination of the area it serves, butLightroots are also warp points for The Depths, like Shrines are on the Surface.

Because of this, Lightroots can typically befound near important structures in The Depthsthat you’ll often need to head back to, like the various Forges and Mines,Bargainer Statues, temple boss battle rematches, and more.
However, the only “challenge” of the Lightroots is actually getting to them in one piece -there is no challenge required for unlocking a Lightroot.

When you arrive, simplywalk into the light under the Lightrootandinteractto light up the Lightroot.
Finally,Lightroots can un-break hearts damaged by Gloomdown in The Depths.
Simplystand beneath a Lightrootand watch your grayed-out, broken hearts blink white one at a time and heal.
Thisdoes not heal you, but itremoves Gloomfrom those hearts so that you can use regular cooked meals or elixirs to heal for hearts as you normally would.

Lightroots Connect To Shrines On The Surface
You’ll notice this on your own before long after unlocking several of the Lightroots in Tears of the Kingdom, butevery Lightroot matches up with a Shrine on the Surface.
With 120 shrines on the Surface of Hyrule, and 120 Lightroots in the Depths below, this pairing allows you touse Shrines to find Lightroots, and vice versa.

Thenames of each Lighroot and Shrine are the same, but spelled backwards. For example, theMarakuguc Shrineoutside of Goron City perfectly aligns with the Cugukaram Lightroot beneath it in The Depths not far fromthe Fire Temple.
When you find a Lightroot as you’re exploring the Depths, check the Surface map as well to see if you’ve unlocked the matching Shrine on the Surface!

This is only true ofShrines that are on the Surface -Shrines that exist on Sky Islandsdon’tpair with the Lightroots.
How To Use Our Guide
In the guide below, we’ve pinned down the location of every Lightroot in TOTK, and have organized them in accordance with themap of every Shrinewe used to do our Shrine location guide.
However, sincethe topography of The Depths is inverse of the Surface, what’s mountainous in Hyrule is cavernous in The Depths.

To keep everything organized, we’veorganized the Shrines by the regions they sit under.
It’s helpful tocross-reference your Surface map and Depths mapto keep track of where you are and what to expect up ahead by using your Surface map.

What Do You Get For Finding Every Lightroot?
Unlike completing all the Shrines, which offers a pretty powerful piece of armor, thereisa prizefor activating all Lightroots in Tears of the Kingdom, but it’s unfortunately not quite as cool.
Finding every Lightroot in Tears of the Kingdom rewards you with theDispelling Darkness Medal.
At present, the Dispelling Darkness Medal does not have a function. It’s not clear whether one will be added withupdates or DLCat a later date, but at time of publishing this guide, there isno known use for the Dispelling Darkness Medal.
However, finishing the task is kind of a prize in and of itself - you’ll havetotally illuminated The Depthsby the time you’re finished, making any and all future exploration for things like Zonaite mines or Yiga Hideouts that much simpler!
