There are so many important characters inBaldur’s Gate 3who aren’t even your party members. Certain characters can join your camp and keep you company during Rest. You have to go out of your way to find and bring people back to camp, though.

Some of these characters are merely pleasant additions to your group, while others are crucial for important things like preparing for a fight or recovering from a fight. This list will detail every NPC that can join your camp and how to get them.

Update on June 29, 2025, by Sharnelle Earle:We have played through the game more than once and found other characters that join your camp, whether as official companions and party members or as a camp follower. Official party members can fight with you and can possibly be romanced with. Camp followers are NPCs available at camp to speak with sometimes and may be a part of a side quest but will not stay forever. Here is a list of all the NPCs you may find throughout the game that have the ability to stay at your camp.

16Tara The Tressym

Tara is a mythical creature whose presence can be found either very early in the game or very late in the game, depending on whether you choose to play as Gale or not. If you’ve spoken to Gale about his personal interests more than once in camp, you will find out that Tara is his beloved companion and pet.

Where To Find Tara

If you choose to play as the origin character Gale instead of a customized player, you will find Tara at camp in Act One. If you are not playing as Gale, you will have the pleasure of meeting Tara in Act Three.Tara can be found on the rooftopsof the Open Hand Temple in Rivington, where her location will start changing throughout Baldur’s Gate.

15Scratch

Scratch is one of the most famous furry babies in the game. Everyone wants him at their camp. If you have the pleasure of finding him, you will need to work to convince him to join you as he will be currently protecting his dead owner, whom he believes is just sleeping. you may do this by having good Nature or animal understanding or by using a Speaking With Animals potion.

Where To Find Scratch

Scratch appears in Act One of the game, just outside the Blighted Village. When facing the Blighted Village entrance, he will be somewhere to the right near the river.

At camp,Scratch will be able to play fetchand can be pet daily. Some companions will even increase their Approval of you if you pet Scratch.

14Owlbear Cub

This is a unique situation in the game that requires strategic thinking in order to even get the Owlbear Cub. This is a unique pet that can join your camp and befriend Scratch if you have him as well.

Where To Find The Owlbear Cub

The Owlbear Cub appears in Act One. The cub and his mother are located within a cave along a steady stream in front of and below the Blighted Village. If you may keep the cub alive during combat with the mother, you can laterfind the Owlbear Cub trapped in the Goblin Camp.

13Volo

Volo is a unique and funny character you can meet early on in the game.He may even have the cure to fixing your worm problem… Maybe. Volo is an enthusiastic writer and Bard who wants to collect all the information on the goblins and about your interesting adventures to create a story and music. He can be recruited as a camp follower but not an official companion.

Where To Find Volo

Volo is first found within the Druid Grove, where the Druids are protecting the Idol. If spoken to here, he will explain that he is going to the Goblin Camp to obtain more information.

You can then find him being used as a jester and slave Bard at theGoblin Campin the courtyard. If spoken to here, a goblin will remove him and bring him to a small cell within the Shattered Sanctum. You can rescue him from the goblins and have him join your camp.

12Withers

Withers is by far one of the most useful charactersyou can find at your camp. He provides many benefits and gifts. Withers can revive dead companions for some Gold if you do not have any spare Revivify spells. He can also provide Hirelings to fight for you or allow you to change your class.

Where To Find Withers

In the Early Access version of the game, Withers used to need to be found through the quest Exploring The Ruins. He now simply appears in your camp after a while of exploring in Act One. You don’t need to do anything to acquire him.

11Halsin

Halsin is a Druid elf companion that you may acquire. He persists all throughout Act One to the end of the game, but he won’t actually be able to join you as a potential companion in your party until Act Three.

Where To Find Halsin

You will first hear of Halsin in Act One when the patrons of the Druid Grove speak of his absence.Halsin can be rescued from the Worg Pens in the Goblin Camp. If saved, he will return to the Druid Grove. After dealing with the fight between the Goblins, Tieflings, and Druids, Halsin will stay at your camp well into Act Two. At the end of Act Two, he will be available as a companion.

10Oathbreaker Knight

The Oathbreaker Knight is a unique NPConly available to the Paladin class. Every Paladin has an oath, such as the Oath of Devotion or the Oath of the Ancients. If you break either of these, you will become an Oathbreaker.

Where To Find Oathbreaker

This Knight visits any Paladin who breaks their oath. You can return to your old ways by speaking to him or take the path of most resistance and continue breaking the rules. You can break your oath by choosing any dialogue option or path in the game that goes against your oath’s morals. He will then appear in camp.

9Barcus Wroot

Barcus Wroot is a funny fella you can rescue early in the game. Though he is found earlier in the game, he can’t actually join your camp until Act Two. He is more a follower in your quest rather than a person you can speak to at camp whenever you please.

Where To Find Barcus Wroot

During Act One, Barcus is first found being tortured by some goblins in Blighted Village. He will be tied to a windmill. You can kill the goblins or convince them to leave. Afterward, you will have to be very careful about what lever you pull in the windmill in order to free Barcus and keep him alive. You can meet Barcus again, working as a slave in Grymforge in Act One. Upon saving him, he can join you for Act Two.

8Minthara

Minthara is an evil or morally wrong character, controlled by the Illithid power and a slave to the Absolute. She controls the goblins in Act One and is one of the three leaders who aim to take down the innocents within Druid Grove.If you side with her, she will become a companion and party member.

Where To Find Minthara

Minthara is found in Act One, inside the main building within the Goblin Camp. She is located in a side room to the right, just before the large entrance to Ragzlin’s throne room. Upon speaking to her, she will already ask you to do her bidding before you even agree to it. You can deny her or side with her.

7Jaheira

Jaheira is a faithful, returning character that existed in the older Baldur’s Gate games. Her reveal is a fun one if you are an original fan of the series. Jaheira can be a permanent companion who can join your party if you play your cards right.

Where To Find Jaheira

Jaheira is found in Act Two of the game as a sort of leader of Last Light Inn. She will aid you in your assault upon Moonrise Towers and Ketheric Thorm. If she survives the entire battle and ordeal,she can be recruited in Act Three.
