Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has revealed that there are two versions of every quest in the game to accommodate Red XIII’s personality change after visiting Cosmo Canyon.
From what we’ve seen and played of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth so far, the long-awaited sequel to Remake is adding a ton of new things, like Chocobo riding, synergy attacks, an open world, and more. As great as all those are, though, one of the most exciting things that it’s bringing to the table is the ability to play as Red XIII, who appeared as a late-game party member in Remake but couldn’t be actively controlled.

Not only is Red XIII playable in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, but he’s also, somewhat strangely, able to ride on top of Chocobos, something that the internet has already fallen in love with.
Not only is Red XIII playable, but it seems like the developers have put a lot of time and effort into his inclusion in the game, as they’ve even created two versions of every quest to accommodate for Red XIII’s personality change after the events of Cosmo Canyon.Spoilers for the original Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth follow.
In the original version of Final Fantasy 7,Cloud and the rest of the party journey to Cosmo Canyon, which is where Red XIII was born. While there, it’s revealed that his true name is Nanaki and that he’s still regarded as a child by the rest of his species. While there, Red XIII gets over his dislike of his father and vows to become a warrior in his memory, which affects his character for the rest of the game and even changes some of his dialogue.
During an interview with Screen Rant, Hamaguchi revealed that, just like the original game, Red XIII’s personality will change after he visits Cosmo Canyon in Rebirth. To accommodate this important moment in the story, Rebirth will actually have two versions of every quest in the game - one for when Red XIII hasn’t visited Cosmo Canyon, and one for when he’s rediscovered himself as Nanaki.
Hamaguchi said, “A fun little tidbit that I wanted to share about that is in the original, you may remember that Red XIII, if you go to Cosmo Canyon, once you go there, his personality changes a bit. And considering that his personality changes, we have it designed so that all quests in the game kind of has a Red XIII and a Nanaki version. So for people, it has all options available for that.”
Not only does this confirm that Cosmo Canyon will play a similar role in Rebirth as it did in the original game, but it also suggests that players might have some kind of freedom over when they decide to visit the area and progress through Red XIII’s character arc. It’ll be interesting to see just how far players can go
