BeforeFive Nights at Freddy’shad even been released,it made back more than its $25 million budgetthanks to the sale of its streaming and theatrical distribution rights. But now that it’s in cinemas, it has made a staggering $130 million worldwide in just its first weekend, cementing it as the second-biggest opening for a video game movie, and the biggest opening for a live-action video game movie.
The current top ten list of highest-grossing opening weekends for video game movies after FNAF’s release is as follows:
In 2023 alone, it made more in its opening weekend than Across the Spider-Verse, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Little Mermaid, John Wick: Chapter 4, Fast X, and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Not only is it the biggest opening weekend for a live-action video game movie, but it’s also Blumhouse’s biggest opening of all time, and the biggest opening for a horror movie this year, beating out Evil Dead Rise, Scream 6, and M3GAN.
Despite Five Nights at Freddy’s already being available in the US on the Peacock streaming service, it made $78 million domestically. Internationally, it made $52 million, culminating in the $130 million opening.
While FNAF made back its $25 million budget and released to a huge opening weekend, the film has not gone down well with critics. It has a measly 26 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, landing it the “Certified Rotten” badge.
While the movie is a resounding success, things have been messier at the screenings themselves. Videos surfaced offans stealing posters, cutouts, and merchandise from cinemas. Some even featured security guards chasing after fans and stopping them at the door before they got away.
There was also a viral clip of fans ‘fighting’ at a FNAF screening in London (as reported byVG247). However, it turned out to be fake.
We did it at the end of the movie for a joke. For fun! I don’t know why she [a TikTok user who covered the viral clip] is getting so stressed over something that doesn’t concern her.
If this weekend has taught us anything, it’s to ensure you book a screening that isn’t between FNAF and the Taylor Swift concert. Those walls aren’t nearly thick enough for how dedicated those two fanbases can get.
