Dragon AgeandMass Effectare the cream of the crop for current day BioWare, with both bringing in buckets of cash for publisher EA and legions of fans desperate for a whiff of new regarding the ongoing development of Dragon Age 4 and Mass Effect 5. Both fanbases overlap quite a lot, which is expected considering both of them come from the same developer and share many of the same qualities, but one former BioWare dev wishes the Dragon Age series was given a more unique identity.

Speaking in the latest issue of Edge Magazine (thanksGamesRadar), former BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn spoke in length about the Mass Effect and Dragon Age games, explaining that he doesn’t really like how “homogenous” they’ve become. Instead, Flynn wishes that the team at BioWare had kept Dragon Age more “PC-centric”, and wishes the series had stayed similar to previous BioWare series Neverwinter Nights.

“We got a little too homogenous between Mass Effect and Dragon Age,” said Flynn. “I wish we would have kept more of a PC-centric, Neverwinter-like identity for Dragon Age, and let Mass Effect really be the cinematic storytelling masterpiece that it is.”

Even the most ardent Dragon Age fan has to admit that more recent titles are pretty much just Mass Effect games in a fantasy setting. Similarly, Mass Effect is just Dragon Age in space, and it’s easy to see where Flynn is coming from when he says both have become too “homogenous” for thier own good these days. Hopefully, the new direction in which BioWare is taking the Dragon Age series will help set it apart from its sci-fi sibling.

Flynn’s comments also make a lot more sense upon the release ofBaldur’s Gate 3and could have been influenced by its colossal success, which has defied all the odds to become one of the most popular and best games of the generation. Neverwinter Nights shares a lot of similarities to the Baldur’s Gate series, what with them both being based off of Dungeons & Dragons, so much so thatBaldur’s Gate 3 even included a little nod to the series.

Maybe a remake could give the Dragon Age series a nice injection of individuality, as many consider Dragon Age: Origins the pinnacle of the series. It’ssomething that the game’s lead writer David Gaiter would be fully behind too, as he was recently seen imagining would a remake would look like with “brand new PS5-era bells and whistles” attached. It certainly isn’t the prettiest game out there, and I’m sure most people would jump at the chance to play the game again with a fresh lick of paint.
