Geoff Keighley has revealed that this year’sGamescomOpening Night Live will be more focused on updates about already revealed games than new titles, a shift he’s trying to make clear ahead of its airing on August 22.
“It’s going to be an exciting show with new looks at many announcedupcoming games like Alan Wake 2and Black Myth Wukong,” Keighley said toVGC. “This year’s ONL is less about announcing brand new projects, and more about giving fans updates on some of the biggest games due out over the next year.”

Nintendo is making an appearance at Gamescom for the first time in four years, so we might see more ofSuper Mario Bros. Wonder, the Mario RPG remake, or any others of its packed release schedule in further detail.Mortal Kombat 1is due out next month and could make an appearance as it did at EVO and Summer Game Fest. And we’ll see Xbox, Bandai Namco, Ubisoft, and Embracer in attendance, all of which have a slew of games coming out fromStar Wars OutlawstoStarfieldtoTekken 8.
Last year’s Opening Night Live ran for two hours with over 35 games, so we might see a similar scope for 2023. We don’t know exactly what will be shown off next week, but Keighley said that the focus is on games releasing within the next 12 months. That could mean anything from Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown to STALKER 2. However, Sony will be skipping Gamescom this year, so don’t expect to see anything fromSpider-Manduring the showcase.
While Gamescom is a physical event held in Germany, Opening Night Live is handled by The Game Awards and is streamed digitally across the world. 13 million people tuned in to watch last year across various streams. You don’t need to physically be there to see all of the trailers or reveals, but Keighley told VGC that the team is “always trying to find ways to create synergy between what’s happening on the floor and inside ONL”.
The only games confirmed so far for this year’s ONL are the two Keighley mentioned, Alan Wake 2 and Black Myth Wukong, so as of right now, there’s no idea as to what this year’s show will look like. However, we don’t have to wait long to find out as it airs next Tuesday, in only a week.
If you want to watch it, you may find the stream on Twitch or YouTube at 8pm CET, i.e. 7pm BST or 2pm EDT.
