Havik makes a surprising return inMortal Kombat 1, having sat the series out since 2006’s Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Now, he’s here, and even part of the main story. But like many characters brought back for the new timeline, there’s much more than means the eye.
In pre-fight banter with Reptile, it’s outright stated that this version of Havik is someone else entirely - someone we’ve seen before. I’ll get into the spoilers below in case you’re looking to avoid them, but it’s certainly good news for fans of the 3D-era games. These titles have gone underserved for some time, and now, we have a pretty deep cut that many players wouldn’t pick up on.

Alright, spoiler time. As spotted byReddituser Prefer_Not_To_Say, the Havik in the new timeline is actually Dairou - a fighter who last appeared in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. This was very much not the case in the original two timelines, with both characters appearing alongside each other in Armageddon, and later as cameos inMortal Kombat 11.
Fan reaction is split. Some are happy to see another reference to these older games and aren’t particularly upset to see Dairou effectively written out. He was hardly the most popular character anyway. Others are more frustrated, seeing it as a pointless change to Havik’s backstory that could have been left as is. Especially since this alters his origin, with him now faring from Orderrealm instead of Chaosrealm as before. Still, this new origin is written so there’s a bit of both of them in the backstory, so neither has been airbrushed out ofMortal Kombatlore entirely, as messy as that can get.
At the very least, Dairou’s return is going down better than another revamped 3D-era fighter. To initial praise, Nitara is back in the series, played by Megan Fox. Unfortunately, Fox’s voice acting isn’t going down well with fans, with many complaining that it’seven worse than Ronda Rousey’s infamous performance as Sonya in Mortal Kombat 11. After waiting for so many years to play as her again - and even get her involved in the main story - it’s a pretty big blow too, but one we’ll have to get used to. Fingers crossed, this isn’t the last time we’ll see the fighter now in the games now, anyway. Especially since her fate in the recent live-action movieheavilysuggests we won’t be seeing her in the sequel. I mean, unless someone glues her back together, I guess.
