HoloCure is a free-to-playaction roguelite, a reverse-bullet hell game in a similar vein toVampire Survivors. It features a prodigious cast of playable characters based on the performers of the vTubing group Hololive. With such a large cast of unique characters, each with their own main weapon, three skills, and ultimate-like special moves, it might be hard to figure out the right character for you.

If you’re already a fan of specific Hololive characters, play your fave, especially since the G-Level system allows you to power up your Oshi with repeated gacha draws. But for anyone who doesn’t know where to start or wants to try someone new, here are the easiest to pick up, most interesting, and just plain best characters to play as.

7Takanashi Kiara

The fiery Phoenix of HoloMyth, Kiara is a durable melee fighter that can set the whole stage aflame with her dancing skills. Perhaps the most beginner-friendly character in the game, she combines mobility and durability with some good damage. Though she’s a melee fighter, her Phoenix Blade cuts a wide arc at a decent range even at level one, and when Awakened, strikes many times and leaves fire underneath anyone hit.

Her Dancer skill gives health regen and a damage boost as long as she keeps moving, which combines nicely with Trailblazer which leaves a flaming trail where she goes, damaging enemies. Phoenix Shield makes Kiara extra hard to kill. Phoenix Fire hits in a decent area, ignites the ground in a circle, and for 15 seconds, returns her to full health should her HP hit zero.

6Oozora Subaru

A cheerful and spirited member of JP Gen 2, Subaru is a ranged attacker who has a strong offense and surprisingly robust defense. Her main attack is Baseball Pitch, which throws a fastball that can penetrate through multiple enemies. Once Awakened, it also gains bonus damage that lessens as the ball travels. Duck Shout knocks enemies back continuously over a duration, dealing damage to any caught in its waves.

Her Duck Whisper creates a soundwave that deals damage in a large area every ten seconds, dealing more to closer enemies and possibly stunning them. Oozora Police is perhaps the strongest defensive skill against normal enemies, allowing Subaru to stack the Handcuff buff, which depletes a charge whenever she’s hit, instantly defeating all non-boss enemies in a close radius. Sunny Optimism gives Subaru a persistent Haste boost, making her a naturally fast attacker, but also stacks Optimism, which can bring her to life if her HP hits zero.

5Amelia Watson

The time-traveling detective and master FPS player of HoloMyth, Amelia Watson is a powerful ranged gunner who’s pretty easy to pick up and play. Her Pistol Shot hits a small area, but fires rapidly, adding bullets, piercing, and damage as it improves. Her special attack, Slow Time, allows her to hit the lag switch on her opponents, decreasing all targets’ movement speeds by 80 percent and giving her pistol a massive speed boost for ten seconds.

Her skills are pretty straightforward but no less effective, with FPS Mastery and Detective Eye increasing her weapon damage and crit chance, respectfully. The latter also adds a two percent chance to defeat a target in one hit. Bubba summons the titular dog to the field, who can collect XP gems and periodically bark, damaging nearby enemies. And yes, you’re able to pet the dog.

4IRyS

Nephilim songstressand personification of Hope, IRyS specializes at dancing at the razor’s edge, having the smallest base HP in the game but with a kit focused on healing and damage boosts. If you have the skill to keep her alive, she’s one of the most powerful characters in the game.

Her Nephilim Blast is a long-distance dual-projectile attack, but when Awakened becomes a short-range beam that hits many more times. Half Angel gives IRyS a chance to heal on crit while Half Demon gives her an increasing damage buff every time she heals, up to a cap. Hope gives her a boost to her crit rate and a chance to knock back opponents and heal herself. Hope is Descending, the simplest part of her kit, being a large area attack that deals big damage.

3Gawr Gura

The diminutive Atlantean Shark of HoloMyth, Gawr Gura is a swift assassin that specializes in mobility and damage. Her Trident Thrust is a quick mid-range attack that gains extra hits over a larger area for more damage when it’s upgraded. Thanks to her Short Height, she has a small-to-middling chance to dodge an attack, gaining a movement speed boost and a half-second of invulnerability.

The Power of Atlantis allows her to create whirlpools on the battlefield that draw in and damage enemies. Shark Bite has a chance to afflict targets with Bite Marks (up to five stacks), making them more vulnerable to damage and possibly heal Gura when defeated. Her special ability, Shark Call, summons a shark that deals big damage to all on-screen enemies. It also powers up Gura up, turning her red for 15 seconds and granting her a boost to attack and speed.

2Minato Aqua

The clumsy maid of JP Gen 2, Minato Aqua specializes in flooding the arena with projectiles and fighting at any range. Her main weapon, Cleaning Broom, throws out a spinning broom in an arc, hitting a large area. Fully upgraded, it deals extra damage, throws out extra brooms, and can hit enemies with the Wet status effect, which stacks and increases the damage affected enemies take.

Sololive has variable utility, giving Aqua more HP and more Attack if there are no nearby enemies and more speed if there are. Klutz adds projectiles to all attacks that are multi-hit or projectile, including Cleaning Broom, but those projectiles have a chance to deal half damage. Cleaning Maid not only increases Aqua’s pickup range, but any enemies in her pickup range take extra crit damage. Neko is an effective, if standard, traveling screen clear.

1Kaela Kovalskia

Blacksmith by tradeand member of Holoh3ro, Kaela Kovalskia is one of the most unique characters in the game, with a separate progression system all her own. Her Blacksmith Hammer seems underwhelming at first, with its narrow range and middling damage, but it can become powerful with some work.

Material Grind is at the core of her kit, generating Ore Deposits from felled enemies. They can be mined with her main attack and drop Ores that permanently increase the power of all her weapons if you collect enough. No Pressure is a defensive tool that sends out debilitating waves every two seconds. Blacksmith generates anvils at regular intervals, dealing big damage to one enemy, with a small chance of becoming an Upgrade Anvil.

Her special attack, The Rarest Mineral spawns a giant mineral deposit that deals big damage to all on-screen enemies when struck. After five hits, it is destroyed, giving Kaela a substantial boost to her attack power, speed, and haste.
