You will be able to set an active companion who will follow you on your adventures, and who will help fight by your side. That’s not all, because you can also assign members of your crew to specific locations to do specific tasks. You’ll want to utilize your crew’s unique skills, and here’s how.
What Are Crew Skills
Just like you, each of the availablecharacters you canrecruit to your crewwill have unique skills. These can be anything from piloting skills to combat specialties with certain types of weapons.
Your crew’s skills willreflect their personalities and backstory, but they can alsoprovide buffs for your combat, your ship, and more.Each skill will have a certain rank, and depending on what rank a skill is, it could provide additional benefits.
For example,Sarahhas the skillsAstrodynamics, Lasers, Leadership, and Botany. On the other hand,Samhas the skillsPiloting, Rifle Certification, Payloads, and Geology.

Where To See Your Crew’s Skills
Often, aperson’s skills will appear on-screen when you talk to them. You can alsolook at all of you crew’s skill at oncein the crew menu.
To get to the crew menu, you first need toopen the ship section of your menu.Next,cycle to the crew menufrom here using the appropriate keybinding.
In the crew menu, you can alsoassign people to join you on your ship, or torun an outpostthat you have built. Anytimea skill buff is being appliedon an assignment,that skill will be highlighted white on the crew menu.
Tips For Using Crew Skills
You will typically want toassign crew with relevant skillsto the appropriate task. This will help youmaximize the effectiveness of your crew.
For example, if you end uprecruiting your former bossLin, one of her skills isOutpost Managementat rank three. This willincrease the amount of cargo links, robots, and crewyou could have at an outpost. With this in mind,assigning Lin to run an outpostwould be an effective way to utilize her skill.
In terms of combat, if you want toswitch of your companion’s gear, you’ll want to keep in mind your companion’s special skills. If they have a certain type ofweapon specialty, try andgive them a weapon of that typeto increase the amount of damage they do.
Every so often, when you talk to your crew,they will have something to give you. What items they give you will vary, but it will often be related to whatever skill they have. For example,Barrett’sGastronomy skillmeans he’ll sometimes have foodto give you.
If you are unsure if a skill is being used on an assignment, you’re able to alwayscheck the crew menu again to see if the skill is highlighted in white.
