However, as you progress further in the game, your enemies grow stronger and you need to do the same. To match this rising difficulty, upgrading your gear becomes essential. In this guide, we’ll explain all the types of gear upgrades available in the game.
How To Upgrade Melee And Ranged Weapons
In Lords of the Fallen, you’ll discover variousmelee weaponslike swords, daggers, hammers, as well asranged optionssuch as bows, crossbows, catalysts, and trustyshields.
All of these gear pieces can be upgraded with the assistance of Gerlinde, the blacksmith. However, before you’re able to access her services,you must first liberate her from a prison cell in Pilgrim’s Perch.

These upgradesboost your weapon’s base damage, itsscaling capabilities, andthe number of rune slots, which we’ll discuss shortly.
Now that you understand how the upgrading process functions, you can easily approach Gerlinde. Just interact with her and choose the “Upgrade Equipment” option. This will displaya list of all the gear available for upgrades, including weapons, ranged weapons, catalysts, and shields.
Beneath each gear icon,you’ll find information about the required Vigor and the quantity of Deralium needed for the upgrade.
Runes
You can enhance the abilities of certain weapons byattaching runes to them, or even grant them new abilities. Gerlinde is your go-to for this as well.
Initially,you can purchase some basic runes from her, and as you progress, you’ll come across better ones. Early on, you’ll likely stick with the runes she has for sale.
It’s worth noting thatyou can only attach a rune to a weapon that has been upgraded at least once,making it a +1 weapon.
Additionally, runes come in different shapes, andeach weapon has specific slots that only fit certain runes.
To get started, interact with Gerlinde once more and choose the “Socket Runes” option. You’ll see a list of weapons you can use this feature with. Pick the weapon you want, andyou’ll find a menu displaying all the available runes for that specific weapon slot.
How To Upgrade Umbral Lamp
The Umbral Lamp is a crucial tool for your progression in Lords of the Fallen.You’ll find yourself using it frequently, whether to enter the Umbral realm, overcome obstacles, or gain an advantage in combat. But did you know that you’re able to also upgrade it?
Yes, indeed! Umbral Lamp upgrades areexclusively handled by Molhu, and you can find himin a room on the left side of the Vestige at Skyrest, but here’s the catch:you can only interact with him while in the Umbral realm.
Once you engage with Molhu, you’ll spot the “Upgrade Umbral Lamp” option. However, there’s a specific material you need to locate called theAntediluvian Chisel.
As of the time we’re writing this article, we’re still unsure about its exact whereabouts, but we presume it may be hidden within the Umbral realm during your gameplay.
When you upgrade your Umbral Lamp, it results inan increase in the number of Soulflay charges,enhances Dread resistance(which affects your time spent in the Umbral realm), andunlocks the Secondary Umbral Eye Socket, which we’ll delve into below.
Umbral Eye
Similar to how runes enhance weapons,you can also slot Umbral Eyes into your Umbral Lamp.
These eyes provideadditional bonuses to your character,often related to the Umbral realmorthe lamp’s functions, such as Soulflay or Dread.
Every Umbral Eye comes withtwo distinct effects: one for theMain Socketand another for theSecondary Socket.
Initially,your lamp will have a Main Socket by default.However, as you upgrade it, you’ll unlock the Secondary Socket.
Therefore, before selecting which Umbral Eye to slot, it’s important to carefullyread and consider both sets of effects to maximize their benefits.
You’ll typically discover theseUmbral Eyes hidden within the Umbral realm. They’re often well-concealed, so if you want to acquire them, be prepared to explore the game thoroughly within the Umbral realm.
How To Upgrade Sanguinarix
Lastly, yourSanguinarix, the primary tool for healing, can also be upgraded withthe assistance of Pieta.
You’ll spotPieta standing next to the Skyrest Vestige on the left side, and she specializes inall Sanguinarix upgrades. However, for these upgrades, you’ll need to provide her with an item calledSaintly Quintessence.
The Saintly Quintessence serves toenhance the effectiveness of the healing you receive from your Sanguinarixandincreases the number of charges it can hold.
Different upgrade levels for the Sanguinarix will require one or more units of Saintly Quintessence, so it’s essential to keep that in mind.
You can locate Saintly Quintessence items throughout the game, and our experience indicates thatmany of them are hidden in the Umbral realm, particularly after usingSoulflay on specific Umbral Belly.
