InGuild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure, you will aid the elusive Astral Ward with their fight against the Kryptis, demons from another dimension. The areas surrounding the Astral Ward’s home base, the Wizard Tower, are overrun with Kryptis, and it’s up to you to push them back wherever you can.

Kryptis appear throughout Skywatch Archipelago, Amnytas, and a weekly rotating set of maps around Tyria. Rift Hunts are events that randomly occur across these regions, and offer exclusive rewards if you’re willing to tackle waves of Kryptis. Below, we’ll take a look at everything you need to know about Rift Hunting, and what the rewards are.
What Is Rift Hunting?
Rifts are special events that can occur in Skywatch Archipelago and Amnytas, as well as a set of maps across the rest of Tyria thatrotate on a weekly basis. There arethree Tiers of Rifts, which spawn more enemies withmore health at higher Tiers.
The goal of each Rift Hunt is tokill a certain number of Kryptisto summon the champion Kryptis. Killing this enemy will allow you tostabilize the Riftand complete the event.
Tier 1 Rifts can be completed solo, but Tiers 2 and 3 will require other players to clear them.Joining a dedicated Rift Hunting groupis one of the best ways to quickly and efficiently complete them.
Rifts appearrandomly throughout each map, and can be tracked with theRift Guidance Masteryin the Heart of the Obscure Research track. Additionally, there areno cooldowns on Rifts, meaning you can hunt them for hourswithout hitting a soft capor time-gate.
Rift Hunting Rewards
Upon completing a Rift Hunt, you will obtainEssencecorresponding to the Tier of the Rift. Tier 1 Rifts rewardEssence of Despair, Tier 2 rewardsEssence of Greed, and Tier 3 rewardsEssence of Triumph. Additionally, you will receive a small amount of Essence of Despair for completing any Rift, as well as standard rewards for completing events likeUnidentified Gearandexperience.
Kryptis Motivations
Motivations areconsumable itemsthat you may use toincrease the amount of Essence you get upon closing a Rift. Motivations come in three levels, corresponding to the three Tiers of Rifts:Common Motivationsfor Tier 1 Rifts,Uncommon Motivationsfor Tier 2 Rifts, andRare Motivationsfor Tier 3 Rifts.
Double-clicking a Motivation will starttracking the corresponding Rift. After killing enough Krypyis and drawing out the champion, you have the option toconsume your Motivation to increase the amount of Essence the Rift drops.
Here are the recipes for each Tier of Motivation. They can be crafted by any profession.

Associated Masteries
The following Masteries are related to Rift Hunting. Besides the Rift Guidance Mastery that unlocks first in the Heart of the Obscure Research track, the others are found in the Astral Ward Mastery Track.
Allows you to track Rifts across Tyria.
Astral Craft
Allows you to craft the Astral Ward armor set and unlocks common and uncommon Kryptis Motivation recipes.
Allows you to purchase the rare Kryptis Motivation recipe.
Rift Mastery
Increases the number of Kryptis essences you earn from closing Rifts.
