TheOvergrown Ruins—one of the earliest dungeons that you can encounter—exemplifies this approach, withfour distinct methods of progressionyou can choose depending on your playstyle. This guide aims to show you every single way to get into the ruins, where you’ll be able to find apowerful weapon, animportant amulet, severalfuture quest-items, anda key NPCwho will join your camp.

Method 1: The Ancient Door

After waking up next to theNautiloid crash on the Ravaged Beach, you’ll see a firmly-shutAncient Door in the ruins to the north. It’ll be right next to theOvergrown Ruins Waypoint(X:283 Y:300)

If youdidn’t rescue Shadowhearton the Nautiloid, you’ll find herbanging on this door. Otherwise, you’ll find herunconscious body along the beach.

The door can’t be broken down, but anyone withThieves' Toolscanattempt to lockpick it with Sleight of Hand. That said, theDifficulty Class (DC) is a staggeringly high 20.

Even if you end up breaking your lockpick in this door though, don’t worry—there areseveral other ways to get behind it.

If successful, going through the door will put you in thesouth wing of the Dank Crypt, where you can brave a deadly trap toobtain a magical spear.

Astarion, with his high Dexterity and expertise in Sleight of Hand, will have a+11 bonus to lockpicking. It may be worthrecruiting him from the nearby wreckagebefore attempting this method.

Method 2: The Hole In The Floor

Headwest from the Ancient Doorand clear out a horde ofthree Intellect Devourersto emerge on theother side of the Nautiloid wreckage.

Follow the pathnortheast, passing a trapped Mindflayer to eventually find theRoadside Cliffs Waypoint(X:223, Y:326).

Keep heading east to arrive atthe Chapel Entrance, where you’ll meet a few a group of tomb-raiders arguing among themselves. You’ll be able toconvince them to leavethe area through a variety ofsocial checks—failing that, however, you’ll need to fight them off.

After (or during) the fight,shoot the Coiled Ropeto drop a large rock onto theCracked Tiles, breaking a hole through the floor into the ruins.

This will instantly kill any creatures standing under it, so watch out!

Jumping into the hole will put you inthe Refectory—follow the instructions in the next section toprogress into the Dank Crypt.

This is aone-way entrance, and that you’ll befaced with a fightwith several raiders immediately upon entering.

Method 3: The Refectory

If jumping through dark holes in the ground isn’t your thing, you canhead north down the stairsto a closed door.

Knocking on the door willstart a conversation with Andorn, one of the raiders. A successfulDC 10 Performance or Deceptioncheck will convince him to unlock the door. Failing that, you can try to lockpick the door with aDC 7 Sleight of Handcheck.

Once inside, you’ll have tofight an (understandably) pretty angry Andorn. Once you’ve dealt with him,head further into the Refectoryto fight five other raiders.

Ignite the oil barrelsin the middle of the hallway with a dipped weapon or fire spell to take out multiple at once.

You’ll notice alocked door on the west sideof the hallway. You canbreak it down,or continuefurther south into a room with a statueand lots of books.

Headbehind the statue, and aPerception Checkwill reveal a skull-shaped lever that you canpush to open the locked door.

Going through the locked door will put you into thecenter of the Dank Crypt.

Method 4: The Hatch

Lastly, you cancontinue eastfrom the Chapel Entrance,following thecliffside northeast.

After a short climb down from a ledge, you’ll find a closedwooden Hatch.

Similarly to the Ancient Door, it’ll be a toughDC 20Sleight of Hand skill challengeto lockpick it successfully. Still, with some luck and expertise, it’s entirely possible to get it open, even in the early game.

This will lead you to the north wing of theDank Crypt,where you’ll findseveral Soul CoinsandWithers, a key future NPC.
