Fishing has been a mechanic in games since the days of the Super Nintendo. It’s often portrayed as a side activity that you can do to take a break, catch some fish for food or profit, and sometimes to complete certain quests, and fishing inSea Of Starsis no exception.

The rewards usually aren’t very enticing, but the fishing gameplay has the chance to be fun and challenging. In Sea Of Stars, fishing can feel like the battles that you and your characters will frequently have, and here’s how to master it.

When And Where Can You Fish?

Even though there are no real prompts for it, you can start fishing once you’re free to explore the overworld map. After the heroes leave the town of Mooncradle, you can find a Fishing Spot to the left, indicated by a small body of water and an animation of a fish jumping out of it.

All you have to do is approach the spot until its name appears, and thenyou can press the button to enter the location, mainly made up of a long body of water and a short dock leading into it. To the right will be a sign letting you knowhow many types of fish can be caughtin the spot, and there’s also the chance thatcertain NPCs will be at Fishing Spots, like Merchants or even Quest Givers.

You can also find Fishing Spots hidden within much larger locations (likeopening a specific portal in the Abandoned Wizard’s Lab), and both overworld and secret Fishing Spots are accessible as long as you can reach them, available during the day and night.

How To Fish

To start fishing, walk to the end of the dock and press the interact button to cast your line. It will cast at the highest power, causing it to fly far, and you can steer the lure using the left and right buttons as it moves through the air.

The lure will fly until it lands naturally, but you can force it to land soonerby pressing the interact button. If it lands among a group of fish, you’re almost guaranteed to get a bite within seconds, but if it lands far from them, you can give it little tugs with the left or right buttons to attract some fish.

Be careful not to cast the lure too far to the left or right. Otherwise, it will land on the ground, and you’ll need to reel it back and try again.

When a fish bites, you’ll need tostart reeling it in with the interact button. As you reel, the fish will pull against you, moving to the left or right as it tries to swim into deeper water.

Sea Of Stars Casting The Lure

If you reel while the fish is pulling hard, the tension in the fishing line will rise,as indicated by a flashing red color. The closer the line is breaking, the faster it starts blinking until it snaps, but you can relieve some of the tensionby stopping reeling and moving with the fish.

To help catch the fish, there are two important elements you need to watch for, calledCurrent and Jump.

When the fish bites, a highlighted bit of water will appear and move back and forth. You’ll want tolead the fish into this current and reel once it’s in itto pull it closer without raising the tension, but as you reel and pull the fish to the sides,it’ll be tempted to jump out of the water.

The moment that it does, tap the reel button to stun it(this is indicated by several stars appearing above the fish), and that will be your chance to start reeling it in without any resistance before it recovers. Be wary of stronger fish,as they canbreak your line much faster and may struggle wildlywhen they’re right by the dock.

Keep reeling until you pull the fish out of the water, then decide whether you want to release it or keep it.

All Fish Types And Locations

There are overnine Fishing Spots to be foundin the world, and each one hasbetween two and four types of Fish to catch.
