As you explore the expanse ofStarfield, you’ll find yourself exploring new planets and investigating cosmic mysteries. You’ll tag along with Constellation as they seek out strange Artifacts throughout the galaxy, since one of those is the reason you were able to leave the mining operation on Vectera in the first place.

After your first mission with Sarah is complete, there are three main quests to pursue. One of them has you teaming up with the handsome cowboy Sam, where the two of you follow a clue to a new location for an Artifact.

Travel To Akila

You cantalk to Sam at the Lodge to begin The Empty Nest quest. When you’re ready, you will want toset a course for the planetAkila, which is in the Cheyenne System.

Akila is part of the Freestar Collective, so you’ll be scanned for contraband as you enter planetary space.Touch down in Akila City, and make your way inside the gates. If this is your first time here, you’ll quickly find yourself tangled inan ongoing hostage situation at the bank.

A nighttime scene, and a big board saying “Welcome to Akila City."

How To Save The Hostages

After you and Sam get briefed on the situation, you have the opportunity to act as a neutral negotiator. Here are some dialogue choices that mayhelp persuade the bank robbers to release the hostages:

Quicksave right before attempting to persuade them, just in case something goes wrong and you want to try again. Theorder for options depends on other choicesin your negotiation dialogue.

A phone receiver that bank robbers are using to communicate.

Get The Map For Sam

Once youhavethe hostage situation under control, you and Sam willhead downstairs to the lower vaultin the bank.

Sam will give youa key card that can open up several lockers in the vault, but you’re looking for an item called “Note for Sam.” This should be in one of the lockers on the right side of the room. After Sam reads the note, he realizessomeone named Jacob took the mapalready.

Lockers in the vault for a bank.

Sam isn’t exactly too keen on opening up about who Jacob is, butyou can persuade him to tell you. Otherwise, you may just head out to your next destination. If you end up saying that you’rejust going to ask Cora who it might be, Sam will fess up.

Jacob is Sam’s dad, and the two aren’t on the best terms. Either way, you need tohead to the Coe family estateto try and get this map.

A hardy older man, Jacob, who is Sam’s dad.

Get The Map From Jacob

Jacob doesn’t like the idea of Sam rooting through the family’s history, andhe especially doesn’t like Constellation. you’re able to tell he’s not going to simply give you the map, but it’slocked in the room behind him.

During the conversation, if youlet Sam speak up on your behalf, Sam will like that. This is good if you have anyinterest in romancing Samat some point.

An encampment in the middle of a rocky outcrop.

After the initial conversation with Jacob, you will havea few options on how to get the map.

The quickest, and possibly the easiest option, is tohave Sam distract Jacob. When Jacob steps away from the door, you canpick the lock. It’s anovice level lock, so it only has two security layers.

A dark cave with glowing and floating rocks, being lit by a flashlight.

After retrieving the map, talk to Sam. He will look over the map, and tell youhe knows where to go to get to the Empty Nest. Unfortunately, it’sin the middle of Shaw Gang territory, the same ones who held up the bank earlier.

Reach The Empty Nest

TheEmpty Nest is southeast and less than 1000 meters awayfrom the city, so you can just walk to it. Be careful, asyou may run into some Ashta out in the savannah, which is a dangerous predator whoseattacks can really hurt.

Once you reach the Empty Nest, you’ll seeShaw Gang members and robots patrolling the whole area:

Shaw, the leader of the Shaw Gang, with dialogue options.

None

Turret MK 1

Keep to the high groundas long as you can, andsneak around undetectedso you can come up with a plan of attack. One of the first things you’ll want to do when you initiate combat is todestroy the turrets. No turrets raining down on you will make the fight easier, and you’ll be able topick off each gang member one at a time.

The savannah grass around you cancatch on fire and burn youif you’re in it. Be careful aboutsetting off mineson the ground or being near anexploding grenade.

Get The Artifact Inside The Empty Nest

Once all the outside grunts are handled, head inside the Empty Nest. There will be a fewmore Shaw Gang members to fightinside as well, but you’ll want tocontinue heading deeper into the cave.

There is anexpert levelcontraband catchehere. Unless you have alreadyleveled up your Security skill, you might need to come back later for this.

Turn on your headlight, as the cave will get pretty dark. Someenemies are also waiting for you in the shadowsof the cave ahead.

As you go through the cave, you’ll findantimony, cobalt, aluminum, and nickel. Make sure to mine these if you need them.

The Artifact isburied at the end of the cave.Like you did with the one back on Vectera, use a cutter to loosen it up. Then you’re able to just takeArtifact Chi.

Deal With Shaw

Unfortunately, as you leave the Empty Nest, you’re greeted by more of the Shaw Gang, and none other thanShaw herself. She has you cornered, and says you need to pay up to keep your life. You are presented witha few options on how to proceed:

While you can choose any option, here are somedialogue choices to help you easily persuade Shawto let you go:

Regardless of how you decide to handle Shaw, retrieving the Artifact weakened some kind of deterrent that was keeping the nearby Ashta away.Several Ashta descend on the Empty Nest, and you will need to fight them off.

If youpersuaded or paid Shaw, the Shaw Gang will help you fight the Ashta. Only a few attack the camp, and with the help of the Shaw Gang, they go down pretty easily.

If youtalk to Shaw after the fight, she’ll give you some ammo (and tell you to scram).

Return The Artifact To The Lodge

Once all the commotion has died down, you canmake your way back to Akila Cityto get to your ship. You will want to return to Jemison andhead back to the Lodge.

Add the Artifact to your collection, and you’ll be finished with The Empty Nest quest. Your rewards for the quest areexperience, 7200 credits, a Scout’s Calibrated Rattler, and some ammo.

you may thenrecruit Sam to your team, with the caveat that Cora will also be joining you on your ship. Sam has specialties inPiloting, Rifle Certification, Payload, and Geology.
