In certain dialogue instances, Clerics or Paladinsmay profane their words by reciting this spell. An example of this is with the hobgoblin Dror Ragzlin at the Shattered Sanctum where your class will allow you a one-time cast of this spell.

TheAmulet of Voices, when equipped, can also allow the wearer a cast of Speak with the Dead.

Any character who hasread theNecromancy of Thaywill also get a once-per-rest casting of Speak with the Dead. Youdo not need to pass the book’s three saves.This can generally only be used with a Player Origin character, and learning the spell will make it so that giving the Necromancy of Thay to another character is impossible.

Speak with the Dead can be cast onany dead NPC.However, this does not always mean it will work.

Bodies that have been damaged by magical effects(like that Fireball you might be so fond of, or aRay of Frost) will not be able to be revived for questions.

Similarly, bodies thathave already been brought back oncecannot be revived a second time for questions. For example, the bodies of the murdered gnomes in the Decrepit Village cannot be spoken with if they were revived during combat by the Duergar.

Undead creatureslike zombies, vampires, or skeletons can also not be asked questions.
