Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscureis the fourth expansion in the long-running MMO. This time, you will be sent to islands in the sky to deal with the mysterious new threat of the Kryptis. Before you start exploring the islands in earnest, you may want to recruit a new friend to help you: a Skyscale.

The Skyscale is an extremely versatile mount that can fly, climb up vertical walls, and generally make exploration much easier. In Secrets of the Obscure, by completing the A New Friend achievement, you can recruit a Skyscale of your own. Below, we’ll take a look at how to complete every step of this achievement.
How To Start A New Friend Achievement
To start the A New Friend achievement and start unlocking your Skyscale, you need toown the Secrets of the Obscure expansionandtrain the first Flight Training Mastery, “Who Rescues Whom?”. After that, the collection will automatically start, showing you your first step of finding an abandoned Skyscale egg.
Abandoned Eggs
The first step in this collection is tofind an abandoned eggsomewhere aroundSkywatch ArchipelagoorAmnytas. Which nest has the egg is random, so you may need to search all of them before you find it. However, once you get the egg, you can move on to the next step. After you’ve obtained your egg, talk toSkyscale Trainer Dyannenear theBeacon of Agesto continue.
Skyscale Egg Infusions Collection
Now that you have your Skyscale egg, you need to infuse it with various elements found across Tyria.
Water
Castavall Waypoint, Bloodtide Coast
Swim down from the Waypoint to thebottom of the lake, then interact with the Concentration of Magic.
Fire
Junker’s Waypoint, The Black Citadel
Head southeast from the Waypoint andjump into the Great Imperial Smelter.
Ice
Bitterfrost Frontier
Run into any of the Ice Stormsfound around the map and get frozen.
Air
Hidden Garden, Mount Maelstrom
Complete theCantle of Skyportion of theHidden Garden jumping puzzlein Mount Maelstrom and interact with the Concentration of Magic.
Life
Anywhere
Revive 20 allies. The Temple of Kormir Waypoint in the Crystal Oasis has a large group of fallen allies.
Growth
Reckoner’s Waypoint, The Grove
Headnorthwestfrom the Waypoint to theGardenroot Tunneland place your egg in the dirt.
Headwestfrom the Waypoint and interact with thecoffin.
Movenorthfrom the Waypoint to theHero Point, and interact with it.
Fear
Fallen Angels Garrison Waypoint, Fields of Ruin
Head to thefarm to the south, thenattack the chickens until Angry Chickens appear. You need to be hit by one of the Angry Chickens to complete this step.
Courage
Defeat four World Bosses. you’re able to track this achievement with the Courageous status effect.
Alternatively, you canpurchase the necessary enchantmentsfor infusing your Skyscale egg from Dyanne, but thecost of each item is incredibly high, andnot worth it at all. We don’t recommend purchasing any of these enchantments, as they are relatively easy to get the normal way.
Skyscale Growing Comforts Collection
Next, you’ll need to give your Skyscale various items to facilitate its growth. You can find each item you need as well as how to get it in the table below.

Finally, you’ll need to purchase the following items in this collection to craft a saddle for your new Skyscale.

Talk to Dyanne after obtaining every other item in this collection.
In total, you’ll need29 Provisioner Tokens, 375 Static Charges, 375 Pinches of Stardust, and 500 Essences of Despair. You can get Provisioner Tokens from the Faction Provisioners bydelivering a variety of items, often of thetime-gatedvariety.
For example, you can trade5 Globs of Ectoplasm for a Token once a day, or you can trade anunlimited amount of Lumps of Mithrilium, which can only becrafted once a day. If you’re starting from scratch, it may take a few days or some extra gold to collect all the Tokens you need.
Static ChargesandPinches of Stardustcan be earned bycompleting eventsor other objectives inSkywatch ArchipelagoandAmnytas, respectively. Likewise,Essences of Despaircan be earned fromall Tiers of Rift Hunt Bounties, which can be found in Secrets of the Obscure maps and in other maps around Tyria.
Rising Spirits Mastery And Completing A New Friend
After completing the Skyscale Egg Infusions, Skyscale Growing Comforts, and Skyscale Saddle Materials Collections, all that’s left is totrain the Rising Spirits Masteryin the Flight Training track. This is the final Mastery of the track, so you’ll need a total of 25 Mastery Points to fully unlock this Mastery. You can do this while collecting the items above.
Once that’s done, return toDyanneat theBeacon of Agesand she will reward you with a Skyscale.
Completing this achievement will also unlock theA New Lookachievement collection, which will reward you with theKryptis Skyscale Skin. Even if you’ve already unlocked the Skyscale in Path of Fire, it’s worth doing A New Friend to eventually unlock this exclusive skin.
