How To Get The Icy Helve
Killing the Spectator is no easy task, and we highly recommend yourest before fighting it.
Found by walking through thebroken window of theSelunite Outpostnear theShattered Sanctum’s entrance to the Underdark, the Spectator willcatch your party off guardand gain initiative over your surprised team.
The Spectator is a tough battle if you’re not prepared, as it has a range ofhigh-damage ray attacksthat will impede your damage output. You will have toset up buffsand be ready to help your fallen companions while whittling down the enemy’s health.
TheBless,Resistance,Beacon of Hope, andWarding Bondspells willincrease your resistanceto the Spectator’s attacks. Therefore, it’s recommended tobring a clericlike Shadowheart along with you in this fight.
Warding Bondis a level two Abjuration spell that gives an ally resistance to all damage types, and a +1 to Armor Class and Saving Throws. However, every time the warded ally takes damage, the spellcaster will take that damage instead.
In each round of the fight, the Spectator willfree the petrified statues to fight for it. If you do not want to kill the drow, you can try tofree themfrom the Spectator’s mind control. Sometimes, shoving an opponent or allywill break them out of the spell, but it may also down them.
If you want to use the environment to your advantage, trycasting fire spells at the Torchstalkmushrooms in the area orshoving your opponentsinto them. Setting off the Torchstalks is a good way to inflict widespread damage.
Once you kill the Spectator,Dhourn, one of the drow searching for the Adamantine Forge, will thank you for saving him; however, he will likely attack you afterward, allowing you toloot the Icy Helve from his corpse.
If you areplaying as a drow, you will havespecial dialogue choiceswhen speaking to Dhourn. Adrow female, for instance, can convince (read: threaten) Dhourn intohanding over his memory shardand giving information about the Adamantine Forge.
If Dhourn or the other drow are not un-petrified by the Spectator during the fight, you can useBasilisk Oil to cure them, at which point you will be able to speak to, pick-pocket, or kill them. Youcannot pickpocketpetrified people.
You can also sneak into the battle area anduse the Basilisk oil on Dhourn before the fight. He’ll become un-petrified andfight for you, but you will still wake the Spectator.Stealthing into the fight, however, will eliminate the Spectator’s ambush advantage.
How To Get The Icy Crystal
You will fightFilro the Forgottenduring the Adamantine Forge quest, along with a pack of Hook Horrors.
Filro will have an elevation advantage over you when you begin the fight. We suggest that youtake out one Hook Horror at a timeand be careful not to aggro more Hook Horrors into the fight.
You canblast a Hook Horror from the Sussur Treebranches using a spell with aknockback effect. Eldritch Blast is ideal due to its range.
Since you have access to the Sussur Tree’s branches, try toclimb or teleport up to a higher elevationand gain thehigh-ground advantageon the hook horrors.
If you have a character who can castDominate Beastorcommand enemiesto fight for you, you can turn theHook Horrors into alliesfor the duration of your effect. Tryreanimating a Hook Horrorcorpse, too. If you are successful, you’ll have a beefy ally at your disposal.
If you haveSovereign Glutin your party, you can also use his ability,Animating Sporesto resurrect a Hook Horror corpse and have it fight on your side.
Once the battle is over, you can loot theIcy Crystalfrom Filro’s corpse.
How To Get The Icy Metal
The Icy Metal is the final piece to complete the Mourning Frost quarterstaff. To obtain it, you will need tobefriend the Myconids in the Myconid Colony to unlock the Myconid Colony Vault.
To do this, speak tothe Sovereign, the leader of the Myconids. The Sovereign will ask you to wipe out theduergar in the Decrepit Village, followed byNere, a True Soul drowfound across the lake. Youonly need to kill the duergarleader to unlock thevault.
Before you kill the duergar in the Decrepit Village, talk to Thullathe gnome in the Myconid colony. Defeating the village duergar will also give you the ‘Duergar Antidote’which you need to close out part ofThulla’s quest.
When you approach the duergar, they willambush you. If you want to get a jump on them, trysneaking into the Decrepit Village. You can alsosplit your partyand position them in areas ofhigh groundand have them stealth into the fight with range attacks gradually.
Use height to your advantage, but bewary of standing too close to an edge. There arethree duergaralready inhigh-ground positions. If you manage to sneak up on them, you canknock them over the edge, but if you’re not careful, they can do the same to you.
Knocking your opponents off of the village ledges is thebest wayto whittle away at their health and win the fight.
Gekh Coal, the duergar leader will becomeinvisibleat some point during the fight, so it’s worth it to have a character in your party who cansee invisibilityor to use spells that will uncover him when cast.
Coming upbehind Lurganwilleliminate the ambusheffects, but if you do not pass thepassive perception check, it will also force you into the fight anyway.
When you’ve defeated the duergar, return to the vault next toDerryth Bonecloaks’s campin the colony. It will only open once you’ve completed the prerequisite objectives.
