When you’re journeying from planet to planet across the vast universe inHonkai: Star Rail, you’re bound to get worn out. Battles with interstellar monsters will sometimes require a little boost, and even then, your HP can be drained very quickly. Sometimes there will be no Space Anchors nearby to help mitigate the damage from a rough encounter.

Fortunately, abandoning your expedition is not your only choice. Like all adventure games with their foods, potions, and first-aid kits, Star Rail has a system you can rely on to revive, heal, or apply different buffs to your characters. This feature is portable, convenient, and super easy to use.
What Is The Synthesizer?
The Synthesizer, officially called Omni-Synthesizerdue to its versatile nature, is a machine thatyou willfind aboard the Astral Express, and its purpose is toallow you to craft a variety of items.
Though it appears as if it is mainly meant to be used to craftconsumables that can aid you and your party with unique boosts, there are other functions this handy machine can serve, likehelping you exchange materials, and even craft relics.

Overall, the Synthesizer, which evenhas a quick access button on your phone’s menu display, has four categories for crafting or transforming items.
How To Unlock The Synthesizer
Although you board the express fairly early in your journey, the Synthesizer is not immediately unlocked. To be able to use it you will need toreach Trailblaze Level 14and complete the missionLong Wait for the Blade’s Edge, which isthe seventh part of thesecond Trailblaze mission, In the Withering Wintry Night.
How To Synthesize Consumables
Consumables are special single-use itemsin Star Rail that will cause specific effects when used. Some consumables will restore HP, for example, while others will give you offensive or defensive boosts, andthere are even some consumables that will cause negative effects, like inducing sickness or draining your HP.
Synthesizing them is very simple. To do so, you just need toselect the first tab in the Omni-Synthesizer screenand browse through the options.

You will have access to a handful of basic consumables when you first unlock the Synthesizer, but there will be many more items that you will need to unlockby obtaining their recipes through exploration, quests, or in the different world shops. You will be able to craft anything as long as youhave already unlocked the recipe and have the right itemsin your inventory.
Open the first tab in the Synthesizer screen, selectthe consumable you want to craft, adjustthe slider to the number you want, and click Synthesize.

How To Synthesize Materials
Material synthesis is another function of the Omni-Synthesizer. This allows you togroup certain materials to create a higher-quality product.
It is a very useful feature tomaximize the utility of Trace and Light Cone materialsafter grinding the Calyxes. It can also help you with pooling the right kind of mob drops that you need for different ascension phases.

It works in a very similar way to synthesizing consumables, exceptthat you willnot need any sort of recipeto be able to synthesize anything. With that said, it is worth keeping in mind that this featureislimited to the materials you need for Traces and Ascension.
Open the second tab in the Synthesizer screen, select the material you want to craft, adjust the slider to the number you want, and click Synthesize. No extra actions are needed.

How To Exchange Materials
Materials exchangeis another one of the functions of the Omni-Snthesizer, andyou can access it through the third tab. This function allows you tosacrifice some of your existing materials to create a different material.
Unlike Material synthesis, there areno limitations to thecombination of choices you can makewhen exchanging materials, providedthey are from the same group and quality. They do not have to be the same type of drop, but you will only be able tochoose from their equivalents in quality.

The easiest way to look at it is through color codes. For example, you may exchange two types of green materials for another type of green material, but you cannot exchange green materials for blue or purple materials.
This function isspecific to exchanging normal mob drops and Stagnant Shadow materials. You should also bear in mind that you will only be able to exchange materialsby combining two different types.
The point is, that they need to be different, andyou need to use two to obtain one. Therefore, this can be a little costly in terms of efficiency, unless you have some leftover materials you will not be needing. In essence; you’re able to exchange mob drops for other kinds of mob drops, and Stagnant Shadow Materials for other types of Stagnant Shadow materials.
The step-by-step is as follows:
Stagnant Shadow materials exchangehas a limitof 20 per week.On the other hand, you may exchangeas many normal mob drops as you want; they are not limited.
Where To Get Synthesis Materials
There are a few ways to obtain different synthesis materials in the game. The options also range from quick to more time-consuming, soyou can choose whatever is most convenient to you according to the time you have.
Fighting Mobs On The Map
All ascension types in Star Rail willrequire certain mob drops, and even though the synthesizer is a great help in getting exactly what you need,it can’t create the material itself,so you will need to gather some of these materials first.
The easiest way to farm what you will need isto take a stroll around the unsafe areas of the map in the different worlds, engaging mobs in combat. As a general rule of thumb, you will be able to find mobs in the following locations:
Regular mobs that are found across the mapare usually fairly easy to defeat, so the main issue you will face here will likely be the time you have to dedicate to hunting down enemies.
Destroying Breakable Objects In The Overworld
While this will not give you any mob drops, most materials for crafting consumables can be found by destroying random breakable objectsall across the map in each of the different worlds. This will also give you a couple of credits per object you break.
There are usually many breakable objects scattered around different areas, so you will not have a shortage of things to break as you explore, and you will find all sorts of goodies for synthesizing.
Sending Characters On Assignments
Assignments require little involvement on your part, but they tend to take a long time, as sending a character on explorationswill usually take a minimum of four hours to gather a handful of materials.The20-hour-long assignments will give you the biggest rewards, soyou will usually want to send your characters on long assignments.
It is recommended that you use this kind of methodfor gathering your materials as a passive, ongoing thing. That way you will have a consistent stream of materials whether you play consistently or step away for hours andonly come back to the game for quick grinds.
