Starfieldgives you a basic version of everything you will need right near the start of the game: a gun, some ammo, a spacesuit, a handful of curative items, and - before long - a boost pack. It teaches you immediately what you should be scrounging around for over the next hundred-odd hours. That’s smart design.

The surprising part, the big caveat to this setup, is that despite hooking you up with a boost pack within the first 30 minutes, you can’t actually use it yet. The game won’t even make it entirely clear as to why. Here’s how to get that fancy sci-fi jetpack working in Starfield.
Why You Can’t Use Your Boost Pack Yet In Starfield
Bethesda does a good job adding in more role-playing elements in Starfield, after stripping them away somewhat in Skyrim, and then somewhat more in Fallout 4. There’sa wide varietyofseparate skills to master, ranking up in them multiple times by fulfilling ‘challenges’ along the way.
Again, this is cool, and generally appreciated. It’s nice to have meaty sub-systems in a sweeping RPG. ButBoost Assault Trainingisoneof those many skills, and unless you’ve chosena backgroundthat has this as a starting skill, you won’t be capable of figuring out what to make of your jetpack until you place a skill point in it.

You’ll earn a skill point every time you level up, and there’s lots of worthwhile stuff to consider. We strongly considerenabling Boost Assault TrainingASAP; at least its first rank. The combat versatility that opens up once your character actually knows what to do with the big metal thing on their back cannot be overstated.
As for further ranks, don’t feel as pressured to rank up Boost Assault Trainingas you did with unlocking it in general. But it’s true that the default amount of time in which you can boost yourself up or forward before depleting the tank is… not the greatest. Don’t worry - it refuels itself, so to speak, ten or so seconds after you’ve returned to the ground. But that’s a long time in battle, not to mention all those times you’re exploring a planet’s surface and want to get done faster.

So, yes. Do eventually add further ranks to Boost Pack Training, which willadd time to your boosts, and recharge them more swiftly. At least now you know how to get the darn thing up and running in the first place.
