House Ecaz is something of a surprise faction inDune: Spice Wars.They’re only ever mentioned in passing in the books, and canonically were never present on Arrakis besides the occasional guest or diplomat. Their addition to the game lets you see what might have happened if they’d been involved in the conflict!

House Ecaz shares the Fremen’s goal of terraforming the planet into a green paradise… but only for the galaxy’s wealthy elites. If you tend to Arrakis like a garden while playing as Ecaz, you’ll see the Solari start flowing into your coffers.

House Ecaz Abilities

House Ecaz canturn neutral Villages into Sanctuariesby controlling every region that borders them. While a Sanctuary doesn’t provide any of its resources to House Ecaz, it does provide them withone additional Authority per day.Additionally, each Region adjacent to a Sanctuary getsan extra instance of its Village traits.

Sanctuariescannot be attackedby any faction other than House Ecaz, but if Ecaz loses control of even a single bordering Region then the Sanctuary will go back to being a regular Village.

House Ecazcannot initiate a conflictby breaking a truce; if you negotiate peace with another faction, they’ll have to make the first move if you want to start fighting again!

Finally, House Ecaz canconstruct Masterpiecesin their Villages. These can be any building type (Economic, Military, or Statecraft), so attempt to match them to their host Village’s traits. Masterpiecesdon’t do anything on their own, and take up two building slots instead of just one, but there are several bonuses that House Ecaz can unlock that check how many Masterpieces you have.

Masterpieces also discourage attacks from other factions;destroying a Masterpiececauses the offender tolose one hundred Landsraad Standing.Since nobody besides House Ecaz can make use of Masterpieces, players who seize lands from the Archduchess have to choose between offending the Landsraad or keeping a useless building that takes up space.

Hegemony Bonuses

At five thousand Hegemony, House Ecaz can spend one thousand Solari toname a single unit their Champion.The Champion gets a large stat boost and provides Hegemony every time they kill a unit belonging to an enemy faction. Raiders, militia, and renegades do not provide Hegemony when slain by the Champion.

House Ecaz can also designate a single Village they control as aGarden Resort.The Village remains a Resort for the rest of the game, and this decision cannot be reversed. Garden Resorts provide large bonusesbased on the number of Sanctuaries and Masterpieces adjacent to them, so try to plan a Resort that has two or even three Sanctuaries if you can manage it!

At ten thousand Hegemony, House Ecaz getsthirty free votes to put toward each Resolution at the Landsraad Council.They also receiveone-fifth of a percent of their total Hegemony scorein Solari each day.

Ecazi Councilors

Most of the Archduchess’s advisors are her direct family members, all of whom have a vested interest in maintaining the dynasty’s fabulous wealth and luxurious lifestyle.

Sanya Ecaz

Archduchess Armanda’s eldest daughter encourages the player to make full use of her House’s unique mechanics. Shereduces the cost of building Masterpieces by forty percent, and causes them to generatefifteen Solari per dayonce built.

Rivvy Dinari

A swordmaster without a home after the fall of Ginaz, Rivvy has found gainful employment in the Archduchess’s service. He allows House Ecaz units tostart with one extra Experience Level. Better yet, when a unit reaches max level, theyno longer require Solari upkeep!

Ibbo Vipp

Ibbo Vipp is a renowned philosopher. He allows House Ecaz tobecome immune to a single Resolutionat each Landsraad Council, saving potential headaches. He also grantstwo Landsraad Standingeach time a Masterpiece is completed.

Mesa Ecaz

Mesa requires a bit of finesse to leverage properly, but in the hands of a skilled player she lets House Ecazexpandalmost as quickly as the Fremen.First off, shedoubles the construction speed of Masterpieces. Alongside her sister Sanya, this can help bring in lots of money to the treasury.

Whenever House Ecaz willingly abandons their control of a Village,the Authority they spent to annex it is fully refunded.If the now-neutral Village contains a Masterpiece, it provides House Ecaz with athree-percent increase to their daily Authority gain.If it’s also a Sanctuary, so much the better!

House Ecaz Developments

House Ecaz has several unique developments to augment their play style.

Early Game Strategy For House Ecaz

Sanctuaries are key to your success while playing as House Ecaz, so as you explore the map you shouldplan where your Sanctuaries will go.Once you’ve taken control of all the Regions adjacent to your Main Base,train or salvage Ornithoptersuntil you have at least three and aggressively explore your half of the map. Don’t focus as much on investigating discoveries as you normally would - the important information ishow the map’s Regions are laid out.

An easy way to get Sanctuaries early is toplace them at the edge of the map.That way you’ll only need to take two to three surrounding Regions, rather than four or five.

Use the extra Authority from your Sanctuaries tograb up as many Regions as you canbefore you start to encounter other factions. Once you have neighbors, you’ll have tocarefully plan your attacks on neutral Villagesto cut off enemy expansion and ensure that you get more space for Sanctuaries.

Once you have extra Influence to spare,negotiate a truce with the opponent directly across the map from you. That way, you can spend some of your extra Authority on treaties. If House Atreides is present, they’re ideal for this. Stay at war with the other two leaders for now; you want to be able toseize border Villages if need be, and you can always negotiate a truce later.

Late Game Strategy For House Ecaz

Once you can’t expand any further without costly invasions,end your remaining warsand focus exclusively on your economy. Shift your Agents to Counterintelligence, since there are likely to be some assassination attempts coming your way. Focus on producingInfluence and Solari, angling simultaneously for Political and Economic Victories.

House Ecaz’s units aregreat on defense; use that to deal with any raiders or warmongering rivals that enter your territory. It’s important to note that while House Ecaz has strong units,attacking an enemy capital is a bad idea.Lacking decent Demolition units, it’salmost impossible to overcome a Main Base’s Armorwith House Ecaz. If a player needs to be eliminated from the game, your only feasible option is an assassination attempt.
