Sega just announced thatHyenas, its hero-based multiplayer shooter that was set to launch sometime later this year, has been cancelled.
“In response to the lower profitability of the European region, we have reviewed the title portfolio of each development base in Europe and the resulting action will be to cancel ‘Hyenas’ and some unannounced titles under development,” Sega wrote in itspublic structural reform letter. “Accordingly, we will implement a write-down of work-in-progress for titles under development.”

Hyenas recently held a closed beta from August 31 to September 11, which in hindsight, was the last window for players to try it themselves. Earlier last month, there were also rumblings of problems behind the scenes. Sega said that Hyenas was a “challenging” game to develop and that it had been reviewing its business model and making adjustments. Unfortunately, that appears to have led to this cancellation.
As a result of these cancellations, Sega expects to lose 14.3 billion yen for fiscal year 2024 and will focus on mainstay IPs and several new titles in the third quarter.
Hyenas was only anounced last June.Alien: Isolationdeveloper andTotal Warcreator Creation Assembley were heading up this ambitious new shooter where you were tasked with picking a hero and then racing against other teams to rob “pop-culture artifacts”. It was set to launch sometime this year for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, but no concrete date was ever given prior to its cancellation.
Sega had incredibly high expectations for Hyenas. Before the game was even announced, it hopedto make over $900 million in lifetime salesand called it a “Super FPS Game”. However, after its reveal, several closed betas, and subsequent gameplay trailers, players didn’t take to it. The latest teaser, from August 16, had a ratio of 8,000 dislikes to 1,000 likes. The announcement trailer from last year didn’t fare much better, reaching 1,400 dislikes and only 370 likes.
“We knew our plans were ambitious, The Hyenas team said in a newly released statement. “We knew we were diving headfirst into competition with some of the greats. But we believed in the journey and we’re proud to have taken every step along the way. We hope you’ll join us in remembering the action-packed, zero-G chaos and the diehard community of players who helped us make it special.”
