We’re in that bittersweet stage when we know that a newFinal Fantasy 14expansion is coming, but don’t yet have all the details, and are desperate to learn more. It’s exciting, frustrating, and leads to countless discussions and theories about what might happen next. After the announcement of Dawntrail, the community has been hard at work placing their bets and making their best guesses.
One of the biggest topics being discussed is the addition of two new jobs. We know one will be melee and the other a ranged magical DPS. Based on Yoshida-san’s t-shirt hint and the physical appearance of Meteor in the Dawntrail trailer, it’s safe to say one of these will be Corsair or Pirate, or something of that nature under another name.

While it’s likely that this will be the melee role, I’m inclined to think it could still fall into either. Corsair from Final Fantasy 11 offered buffs to party members and used a gun as a weapon, so perhaps this could evolve into a gun-toting ranged magical DPS role for 14? Either way, whatever the more pirate-y role ends up being, I hope the remaining one is more of a surprise for fans.

Many people would love for another classic job like Beastmaster to be added, or something FF11 players would find familiar, such as Puppetmaster or Rune Fencer. Geomancer seems like a likely candidate as it’s already a canonical part of FF14’s world, being mentioned in the Astrologian questline, but personally, I want something a little more niche.
While some people didn’t gel with Final Fantasy 10-2, I really enjoyed it. Even if you didn’t like it, you have to admit the Dressphere system — which allowed you to change job roles on the fly in battle — was a brilliant concept. I adored some of the sillier job roles you could switch to, so I can’t help but imagine what it would be like if FF14 took inspiration from some of these instead for its other new role.
Imagine Mascots wearing hilarious oversized suits depicting different FF14 monsters. Songstress or Lady Luck (essentially a Gambler) could offer some interesting mechanics, using songs or cards and dice rolls to cause damage or debuffs. I don’t know how Festivalist could work, but it would look cool, so I’d want that purely for the outfits.
There are some that would lend themselves particularly well, such as Psychic or Gun Mage. Sure, the pirate role might have a gun, and we wouldn’t want two new roles with guns, but maybe the pirate just dual-wields swords — who knows? Let’s not count Gun Mage out just yet.
There are so many job roles that have featured in the series over the years, and some need a little more love. Let’s bring Green Mage back, or why not add in some Time Magic? While Final Fantasy 6’s Relm didn’t offer a proper Artist or Painter job role, other Square Enix titles like Bravely Default have done so, and that could be an exciting idea to explore.
We’re not likely to find out what the other job role is until London Fan Fest in October at the earliest, or maybe even the Japanese Fan Fest scheduled for next year if we’re unlucky, as then we’d have to wait even longer. Either way, I’m hoping it’s something that not many players would have guessed. Something that no one would have seen coming that will be a pleasant surprise. A brand new job role that isn’t based on anything that has come before in the Final Fantasy series or the wider Square Enix catalogue would be really impressive, but I also know that’s a big ask, so I’ll stick to wishing for something a little more niche.
