Baldur’s Gate 3might be the biggest game of the year tonotget a physical launch. Try as you might, you won’t find Baldur’s Gate 3 on a disc anywhere.It’s getting a physical run in Japan, at least, but that still leaves many of us stuck with having to go through a digital storefront - something that’s especially limiting on console.
However,Larian’s director of publishing, Michael Douse, has teased that this won’t always be the case. Douse just shared a tweet from a fan, asking if anyone would be interested in a physical release. In the retweet, Douse says “Bumping for interest,” making it clear that Larian hasn’t ruled out the idea.
This comes shortly after the release date for Baldur’s Gate 3’s Japanese localisation was revealed, launching on December 21 of this year. However, it’s not clear if it will also come bundled with English language support for those of us who want to bag a copy in the West. But now that Douse is teasing a full physical run, we might not have to rely on importing the game from another region.
He adds that the game would likely need to be released with two discs, which is hardly surprising given its size. Hell, those of us onPS5know all too well how brutal those loading times can be - I wouldn’t like to see what it’s like when it’s crammed onto one disc. Still, this would likely be a case of having a separate disc just for installation, not like ye olde days of swapping discs mid-playthrough.
It’s not too surprising to see Larian float the idea of a physical run after launching digital-only, since Baldur’s Gate 3 had a staggered release from the very start. The game launched on PC about a month earlier than PS5, as Larian tried its best to avoid theStarfieldhype. It’s safe to say that this worked, as Baldur’s Gate had secured a loyal playerbase by the timeBethesda’s own RPG hit shelves. Now, we’re still waiting for anXboxlaunch, which Larian has saidwill be with us before the end of the year. With this in mind, getting a copy on disc months down the line is in keeping with its sporadic launch - and that’s not even taking into account it being in early access from late 2020 onwards.
In any case, you’re only able to pick up Baldur’s Gate 3 on Steam, GOG, and the PlayStation store right now. It’s not available elsewhere, nor is it out for pre-order on Xbox just yet.
