Wizards of the Coast has revealedMagic: The Gathering’sfirst set of 2024, and we’re headed back to the streets of Ravnica in Ravnica Remastered.

Following on from this year’s Dominaria Remastered, Ravnica Remastered is bringing together cards from all of our previous trips to the plane, right from Ravnica: City Of Guilds, up to War of the Spark.

Revealed at Magic’s 30th Anniversary Gen Con panel alongside a frankly absurd number of other sets, Ravnica Remastered is scheduled to launch some time in Q1 2024. Following the pattern established by 2022’s Innistrad: Double Feature and this year’s Dominaria Remastered, we can expect this set to launch some time in January or February, before the first Standard-legal release.

Retro-frame Shockland

While we’ve not seen any cards from Ravnica Remastered so far, it has been confirmed that the set will put the focus firmly on the ten guilds that made the setting so popular. As it’ll also pull cards from across Ravnica blocks, we could see an interesting mish-mash of guild mechanics to make playing each of the two colours more varied than they have been previously.

We had an inkling we might be returning to Ravnica sometime soon in April of this year, when March of the Machine introduced a whole new alt-art frame style specifically for Ravnica. It, Ixalan, and Tarkir were the only settings to get brand new frames, and considering we already know we’re returning to Ixalan later this year, the leap to a new appearance for Ravnica wasn’t too great.

First introduced in 2005, Ravnica has become something of Magic’s second home, after Dominaria. A world completely covered in one city, its most famous feature are the ten two-colour guilds who keep the peace. From the lawmages of the Azorius Senate to the erratic scientists of the Izzet League, Ravnica has had a massive impact on the game, right down to the slang we use to discuss the ten two-colour pairs.

Of course, the one thing “Ravnica-themed reprints” brings to mind are the Shock Lands. These have been reprinted in every return to Ravnica so far, and are intricately linked to the ten guilds. In Ravnica Remastered, we’ll be getting reprints of all ten Shock Lands, complete with retro-frames for the first time ever.

Remastered sets for paper play are a relatively new creation for Magic, debuting with 2021’s Time Spiral Remastered. Bar the stumble that was Innistrad: Double Feature, they’ve been highly praised for both their nostalgic but fresh limited environments and high-quality reprints, although getting your hands on packs after a couple of months can be tricky.

Ravnica Remastered will launch Q1 2024. It hasn’t yet been confirmed if this set will also make its way to MTG Arena, or whether it will remain a tabletop-centric release like Time Spiral and Dominaria before it.
