Out of nowhere, Konami treatedMetal Gearfans witha new trailer for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eaterat the first Xbox Partner Preview event, which gave us a look at the game in action for the very first time. While it was only a trailer intended to show off the game’s new engine, it did give us some gameplay to look over, as well as a good idea of what the title may look like when it finally hits store shelves. Unfortunately, quite a few people aren’t too happy with what they saw.
Shortly after the trailer went live, many noticed that the game’s distinct green haze was strangely absent, as Konami appears to have opted to go for graphical fidelity rather than keep the original Snake Eater’s art design. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater obviously looks absolutely stunning, like most big triple-A productions these days, but some are worried that the removal of the green haze is going to significantly impact the game’s atmosphere, and not for the better.
It’s a little odd that the feel of the original Snake Eater isn’t being preserved, especially since the rest of the trailer felt quite authentic and respectful of the source material. Snake’s camoflague mechanic has been kept in tact, as has the ability to go into first-person while prone. At the start of the trailer, it’s made clear that the footage captured is from a pre-alpha version of the game, so there’s always the possibility the green haze could be added before release, but fans seemrelativelyunimpressedright now.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater isn’t the first remake in recent years to be accused of stripping away art design and direction in favour of pure graphical fidelity. Shadow of the Colossus and Demons' Souls were two remakes (both developed by Bluepoint funnily enough) that a lot of fans criticized for getting rid of the art direction, feel, and smaller details included in the originals, and developers are always risking changing the things that made the original games so special by revisiting them with a remake.
Thankfully, Konami just made the original Snake Eater far more accessible if you’re not fancying the look of the remake, by releasing Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 on modern consoles. It includes the first three games in the series in one convenient package, and there’s also the possibility that a second volume may see bothMetal Gear Solid 4 and Peace Walker rescued from the prison that is the PS3.
