Mortal Kombat 1just got a brand-new launch trailer that finally revealedthe long-leaked Reiko.
We even get to see his X-ray in action as he throws his spear through Raiden and proceeds to crush his skull into scattering fragments in classic, gory MK fashion. His look is ripped right from the 3D era, except now he lacks glowing eyes, but his chest is still out in the open for everyone to see.

Reiko hasn’t had a full appearance since Mortal Kombat: Armageddon in 2006. Back then, in the original, originaltimeline, he was an outworlder and general in Shao Kahn’s army. He has made appearances since, however, with cameos in MK9, MKX, and MK11, but this is the first time he has been a playable character in 17 years.
The trailer also gives us a better look atMegan Fox’s Nitarain action, as well as the Jean-Claude Van Damme Johnny Cage skin. He’s the inspiration behind JC and was even asked to appear in the first Mortal Kombat, though he turned the role down. Aside from characters, the trailer offers brief snippets ofInvasions gameplay, the Krypt replacementthat is one part Mario Party, one part Mortal Kombat, and the return of minigames like Test Your Might.
With Reiko’s reveal, we now know for certain that every character in MK1 is a returning one, something that hasn’t happened in 12 years since Mortal Kombat 9. However, it did introduce Skarlet in a DLC. Mortal Kombat X introduced far more in its base game, with the Kombat Kids (Takeda, Jacqui Briggs, Cassie Cage, and Kung Jin), as well as Erron Black, Kotal Kahn, Ferra-Torr, and D’vorah. MK11 then introduced Geras, Kollector, Cetrion, and Kronika. Given that MK9 introduced a brand-new character via DLC, it’s possible MK1 will do the same.
We also get to see Kronika in the trailer, though she appears to be a pivotal part of Shang Tsung’s story, rather than a playable character.
That being said, fans aren’t too fussed about the lack of new additions, at least going by the Mortal Kombat subreddit. Many believe that the 3D-era characters are essentially taking the place of ‘new’ characters, seeing as they haven’t appeared in upward of two decades. NetherRealm is clearly reimagining them for current audiences and the more modern approach to storytelling, with updated designs and new places in this new timeline. They might wear old hats and have familiar names, but they’re basically new additions.
