Mortal Kombatisn’t afraid to get a little silly now and then. Hell, inMortal Kombat 11, you could make RoboCop fight the Joker. But things were even more daft back in the 3D era. Upping the ante from the Friendship finishing moves in the original trilogy, the devs started putting a bunch of joke renders - and even full videos - in the games, and it was great. In fact, it’s how we got the iconic “Cooking with Scorpion” video, which everyone needs to see.

But while Mortal Kombat 11 had its own genre of strange, it’s nothing on the laughs we got in the ’00s. Now, fans are calling onNetherRealmto return to its roots, once again filling the Krypt with gags and silliness, not just cosmetics and other generic unlockables.

“I miss when MK had funny lil renders like this in the Krypt,” says Reddit user mymungus, sharing some of the daft joke items in the old Krypts.

Unsurprisingly, this has got many fans feeling nostalgic, and wishing the newer Mortal Kombat games could have a laugh like this. Modern MK Krypts might be more expansive, but there are no renders like this to be found. No sign of Kung Lao’s telemarketing career, or Bo ‘Rai Cho’s own alcohol brand. WithMortal Kombat 1’s story looking quite serious too, we probably shouldn’t expect them to make a return anytime soon. But who knows? Mortal Kombat 11’s Friendships were hardly in keeping with the main narrative’s tone, so NetherRealm might have some fun with it.

Regardless, the joke renders weren’t even the best part of the 3D era. No, you could also unlock videos, and cooking with Scorpion has to be the best. Like, they actually got the actor to dick around in a kitchen for a gag. You have to respect the effort here.

Of course, it gave the devs another way to troll the hell out of us, something they haven’t stopped doing with modern MK. Real ones remember the pain of unlocking the FU Krypt box… only to find that there was nothing inside. There was even a laughing sound effect, mocking you for being so foolish and going for the Krypt that sounded funny. Look, you can take the piss out of us again Ed Boon, just add all of the jokes back, yeah?
