Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universemay have released over 15 years ago at this point, but it’s a classic title that still has more than a few loving fans. It laid the foundation for the Injustice series, which is very popular in its own right, but that’s more than likely ensured that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe will remain a cult classic one-off for the forseeable future. It could have been so much more though, as it was recently revealed that an animated TV show or movie based on the title was once pitched to Warner Bros.

This is according to Jeremy Adams, the writer of several animated Mortal Kombat projects such as the Mortal Kombat Legends series of movies. In an interview withComicBook, Adams claimed that a pitch for an animated Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe crossover project of some kind - most likely a movie - was rejected by Warner Bros. when asked whether the title would return at some point in the future.

“I would lower your expectations,” says Adam. “I don’t know if they have any plans to do more. I do know that we pitched that a while ago, but it was kind of rebuffed.” He also seemed rather uncertain as to why Warner Bros. put a stop to any crossover projects like a TV show or a movie, but it could have had something to do with the development of the Injustice series, with the possibility it didn’t want the two series potentially clashing. Adams would still like to see it happen at some point though.

“Well, I think at the end of the day, I don’t know if they’re ever going to do any more, Adam says. “I hope they do, and I hope they call me to be involved. That would be great because I really love it. But I don’t know. I don’t know. I think it would be really cool though. Trust me, I would love to see a DC Mortal Kombat. That would be super, super cool.”

It’s best not get your hopes up though. It was widely expected before the release of that anInjustice 3announcement would be made pretty soon, but Netherrealm surprised everyone by announcing and releasing Mortal Kombat 1 instead. Now that it’s been over six years since the previous game launched, we can likely expect Injustice 3 to be next on the list once Netherrealm finally gets Mortal Kombat 1 in working condition. Until then, we’ll have to live with the knowledge that Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe could have been a big franchise in another timeline.
