Many of us hold iconic game series near and dear to our hearts. It’s one of the reasons we go wild for game sequels whenever they’re announced at a show; we just want to spend more time in the worlds we know with the characters we love. 2024 holds plenty a game sequel that we here at TheGamer are waiting for with bated breath.
From triple-A giants born of long-running franchises to indie darlings that received surprise sequels, we’ve got one heck of a batch of highly anticipated video game sequels. Read on to see what we’re most excited for!

The Wolf Among Us 2

I was a big fan of Telltale’s narrative adventure games before the studio famously closed. Whether or not I’m going to like the new Telltale remains to be seen. But I do appreciate that they’re making a sequel to the compelling Wolf Among Us.
It was one of my favorite Telltale titles, and I’m excited to have another adventure in the wild and wonderful Fables world. It will be hard for it to live up to the original, and it hasn’t had the smoothest development process. Hopefully, though, it’s a worthy sequel that makes me excited for future projects from Telltale 2.0.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2

I’ve been waiting for Senua’s Saga for a long time. I played the first game quite by chance, having heard next to nothing about it, just curiosity leading me to pick it up. Imagine my shock at witnessing how well the game portrayed Senua’s struggles and how deeply it immersed me in her journey. I played the entire thing in one sitting, headphones on and completely ignoring everything else around me.
These days, it’s actually pretty rare that a game will utterly consume my attention like that. There are always so many things that my thoughts will flutter to while I’m playing a game, whether it’s an errand list I have to do that’s weighing on my mind or anxieties about what tomorrow’s errand list will bring. Senua’s Sacrifice gripped me in a way games don’t always do, and I’m hoping the sequel will grip me in the same way next year.
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector

The more time passes, the more certain I become that Citizen Sleeper is my favourite game of all time. An indie game made by one developer (with the aid of an artist and musician, admittedly), it nails the exact science-fiction that I love to read and tells stories about regular people that offer prescient insight into contemporary issues without ever feeling forced.
I expect the sequel to keep the same beautiful prose and strong characters, but the prospect of piloting your own spacefaring canal boat alongside a crew of misfits is compelling, and I can’t wait to see what’s still to come from the mind of Gareth Damian Martin. I’ll end this with the obvious caveat that Starward Vector may not release next year, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed, and so should you.
Little Nightmares 3

Little Nightmares and its sequel are two criminally underrated platformer/horror titles. They’re filled with fun puzzles, interesting set pieces, and tense chase sequences that always use the horrible designs of the game’s creatures to the fullest. I can still remember running through vents in Little Nightmares 2, being chased down by the teacher with the distressingly long neck.
Now that Little Nightmares 3 has full online co-op, becoming the evil It Takes Two of my dreams, I can also drag some poor unfortunate soul along for the ride with me. Supermassive Games taking over from Tarsier Studios worries me a little bit, but as long as it builds upon the foundations that its predecessors set, then I have confidence it will be one of 2024’s best.
Hades 2

I’ve put Hellblade 2 in a couple of other lists, but if we’re putting Half-Life 3, I might as well take a swing at Hades 2 coming out next year. By SuperGiant’s release rhythm, it should have been here this year. Add in a bigger scope and the pandemic, and adding an extra year seems like a sensible timeline. Oh, also the first one was very good, which is why I want to play it, but I figure you all know that already.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Let’s get the obvious out of the way early — FF7 is my favourite game of all time, and has been since it first enraptured 14-year old me with the idea that the Planet was a living thing. However, Remake didn’t take with me right away. It wasn’t untilI played it through for the Steam Deck performance reviewthat I came to appreciate it, and strangely, it’s going deep into Ever Crisis that has really sown the seeds of hype for Rebirth. I’m curious in which direction they take it, because it’s pretty certain it’s going to go wildly off the rails compared to the plot of the original.
Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD

Is this a sequel? I mean, it’s Luigi’s Mansion 2 so it has to be, right? Even though it’s a remaster, I think it counts, and I’m very excited to play it. Mostly because I have never played it before. My experience with the Luigi’s Mansion series began and ended with the first game as a kid, so the follow-up getting a remaster in 2024 is a welcome surprise for me. Perhaps I’ll finally play the third game in the series after this one, or maybe I’ll wait for the HD version of it to inevitably come to Switch 2 in about six years.
