Over time, PlayStation has seen fantastic titles come home to roost within the powerful confines of their series of consoles. Year after year goes by, and Sony wows us with amazing exclusives, single-player adventures that we replay over and over again, and heart-wrenching narratives that stay with us long after their credits roll. So with this pedigree in mind, we here at TheGamer are eagerly anticipating what 2024 has in store for us on the PlayStation 5.

We’ve got our giant router-shaped PS5s practically humming with excitement over games from long-established studios, gorgeous indie titles, and heady sequels that have our heads in a flutter. Read on if you want to know which games that are releasing on the PS5 in 2024 we are most excited for.

Updated Jul 06, 2025:More members of our staff wanted to expound upon their excitement for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. We have a lot of Final Fantasy fans here. A lot.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Seth Parmer, Staff Writer

Final Fantasy is a special series for many reasons and is ensconced in many people’s hearts as a result, with Final Fantasy 7 being their jumping-on point all the way back in ‘97. However, while I did eventually play the OG Final Fantasy 7, it wasn’t until after I experienced the first part of the Remake that I truly understood what all the hype was about for this particular title.

Now, with Remake Part One, the OG FF7, and even Crisis Core under my belt, it is unquestionable to me that I am looking forward to Rebirth more than anything next year. The timeline stuff is fascinating, and the enormous plot twists that may or may not happen are enticing. I just want to get lost in all of it again!

Why explain? Well, I just do! I’m really looking forward to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The original game was a big part of our growing up, and the first part of the Remake was awesome. Now, with better graphics and new gameplay, not to mention the plot changes we saw at the end of the first part of FF7 Remake; I’ve got questions!

Are we heading into more jaw-dropping moments (wink wink), this time with upgraded textures and graphics? Or is there a whole new set of surprises waiting for us? I’m need answers! With so many questions bouncing around, the day is getting closer when we’ll find out everything.

Sword of the Sea by Giant Squid

Sword Of The Sea

Amanda Hurych, Evergreen Content Lead

A few of my favorite games are less about the story and more about the impressions and beauty they impart. None have done this as well as Journey or Abzu, which is why I’m so excited for Giant Squid’s next game, Sword of the Sea.

The trailer plays haunting melodies and showcases captivating vistas. Plus, my little character is hoverboarding over shimmering copper sands while dolphins soar in the sky. Does that alone not sound cool?! And you’re able to bet there will be more than one moment like that, where the sheer gorgeousness of what’s happening will make my jaw drop so hard, I’ll bruise my chin.

James Troughton, Cross-Department Editor

I’ve always loved Insomniac, whether I was gunning down robots on a crashing ship in Ratchet & Clank, grinding on rails as I eviscerated zombies with vinyls in Sunset Overdrive, or swinging through New York City in Spider-Man. Every game delivers (except for All 4 One, but we don’t talk about All 4 One), and it’s always exciting to see how it’ll branch out and challenge itself with each new release, especially across new series.

We’ve seen its take on a world of superheroes with two Spider-Man games, soon to be three, but a grittier Wolverine story could mean anything, and with so few details to go off of, I’m even more excited filling in the blanks. Maybe it’ll be a linear, noir story about a disgruntled X-Man on the hunt, Insomniac trying its hand at the hack-and-slash genre. Who knows? Whatever it is, I can’t wait to find out more and finally try it for myself.

A woman in project Eve

Stellar Blade

Axel Nicolás Bosso, Guides Trainer and Evergreen Editor

Look, I’m an easy dude. I like my fighting games, my Yakuzas/Like a Dragons, and my character-driven action adventures. When it was first shown, “Project Eve” might have caught the attention of a specific public — yeah, we all know where you were looking at, perv. But I was completely surprised by other animations. The combat in Stellar Blade looks absolutely sick and engaging, and even after watching only two short trailers and not knowing much about it, I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on it. Let’s hope 2024 is the year when it launches.

Dragon’s Dogma 2

Ryan Thomas Bamsey, Deputy Lead Guide Editor

We haven’t seen all that much of Dragon’s Dogma 2, but the original game was entirely my jam, so I can’t help but get excited and giddy at the thought of returning to Gransys. What we have seen looks gorgeous — there can never be too many medieval fantasy worlds to explore.

The first game was revolutionary for its time — the context-dependent barks, ingenious pawn system, dynamic combat, and merciless quest system made it a truly unforgettable experience. I seriously cannot wait to see how Capcom is going to build on this legacy.

It would be very on-brand of me to say that my most anticipated title for PS5 was something like Rise Of The Ronin or Flintlock, but I have to face facts. No matter what pseudo-historical niche titles hit the console in 2024, none of them are going to call to me as much as more time with the FF7 crew. You win this time, Square Enix.

Skull And Bones

David W. Duffy, Database Editor

It’s fair to say that this one has had a rather difficult life so far, being in development hell for a decade now. I went hands-on for a technical test last year, and while for certain legal reasons I won’t say anything about the experience, it did leave me wondering how the final game will turn out despite all its troubles. Sure, there are games like FF7 Rebirth I am really looking forward to for fun purposes, but this is less about a game that I am anticipating because of hype and more an ever-expanding intrigue that’s not left me since that brief weekend.

Crimson Desert

Harry Alston, Senior Specialist

The trailer for Crimson Desert at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live totally blew me away. I’ve played Black Desert Online for years, so to see Pearl Abyss take everything they’ve learned from the MMO — immersive mini-games, world-building, and horse drifting — and transfer that to a single-player adventure is so exciting.

My biggest problem with BDO has always been its microtransactions, and while there might be offerings for cosmetics and other bits of gear, it’s unlikely that Crimson Desert will have quite as many premium currencies as the MMO. This has rocketed to the top of my most anticipated game of 2024…if the game releases in 2024, that is!

Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown

George Foster, Lead News Editor

I’m hoping that my most anticipated game of 2024 being so early in the year is a sign that I’ve got a banger year coming up, and not that it’s going to be a bit empty. Skepticism aside, what better way is there to start the year than with a new Prince of Persia made by the Rayman Origins and Legends team? That’s rhetorical; there’s literally no better way. I was already excited by the trailers, but after having played through a demo at Gamescom, I’m certain that The Lost Crown is going to be one to watch. Wish I had time-control powers to fast-forward to January…
