Neopets was all the rage in 2000, but nostalgia is a funny thing, and there’s stilla devoted community keeping the spirit alive. Neopets is a massive website based on taking care of a virtual pet, or ten, by feeding them, exploring Neopia together, battling, and playing browser games.

There is a host of NPCs to interact with, as well as shops, and holidays. There are currently 55 species of Neopets to choose from, and 493 Petpets which, logically, are the pets you give to your pets that you still have to look after. Another way to show your Neopets love is by painting them with a Paint Brush, changing their base model appearance. So far there are 63 colors, and we’ve ranked the best.
10Royal Paint Brush
The Royal Paint Brush is one of a few that differentiates between your Neopet’s gender, with male Neopets typically wearing an extravagant cloak and crown, while female pets sport beautiful gowns and tiaras. Some species, like Kikos and Jetsams, are appointed a noble staff, or even a lightning bolt to wield.
Royal is one of the oldest colors you can paint a pet, or a Petpet, and is only available to buy firsthand from the Hidden Tower in Faerieland, for about 1,700,000NP. The other avenue is to trade for it with players, as the Water Fountain Faerie doesn’t offer Royal, and it’s not possible when zapped by the Lab Ray either.

9Eventide Paint Brush
Eventide is a mesmerizing color, like a sun setting over your Neopet, and small stars and clouds drifting into view. Some species have touches of orange and red on their extremities as well, making this a perfect match for any galactic or magma themed makeovers.
Eventide Paint Brushes aren’t sold in any base shop, but can be acquired through random Jacko the Painter events, the Alien Vending Machine, and Wheel of Extravagance. Or if you don’t necessarily need the Brush itself, a Water Fountain Faerie quest can yield this color, as can a Morphing Potion, or the Lab Ray.

8Marble Paint Brush
Marble Neopets are a gorgeous swirl of all different colors, and a crystalline shine effect. Kikos and Jubjubs are particularly cute in this color, as they really do look like little round marbles. Chias get a fancy mohawk hairstyle, and Draiks emerge black with mystical golden swirls, while Grarrls have pretty little fossils embedded in them.
Again, there are no Neopet shops you for to click refresh in to acquire one of these Brushes. It’s exclusively available from the Alien Vending Machine in exchange for Nerkmids (though it’s very rare), getting super lucky at the Secret Lab Ray, or receiving a coveted Water Fountain Faerie Quest. Only 24 Neopets are currently available in Marble.

7Oil Paint Brush
The winner of the 2019 Paint Brush Poll, the Oil Paint Brush isbrilliantly designed with a unique concept. Neopets are decorated in painting styles reminiscent of Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch, with Cybunnies based on the swirls of Starry Night, and Peophins wearing the bright daubs of The Sun.

The best way to get this Paint Brush is the Vending Machine, a random event, or trading for it at the Trading Post. It’s of middling rarity, so there’s a better chance of affording one. The Secret Lab Ray is another avenue, once you’ve collected all the Map Fragments.
6Plushie Paint Brush
Who didn’t wanttheir own Neopet as a plushieback in the day? With cute sewn on button eyes, mismatched patches, and fuzzy pastel colors, this Paint Brush is as cuddly as can be. There’s even a Plushie Petpet Paint Brush, so your Neopet can have its own soft pet to squeeze.
There are 55 species that can be painted Plushie, though it’s different to Mutant Sentient Plushie, which is a color exclusive to Poogles. You can buy the Paint Brush from the Altador Cup Prize shop, or get it from the Alien Vending Machine. Just as cute, but not quite as cuddly, is the Burlap theme with a similar stuffed style, only available from the Secret Lab Ray.

5Transparent Paint Brush
Getting a little bit gruesome, butperfect for a Hallowe’en look,is the Transparent Paint Brush. It seems only the skin of the Neopet becomes transparent, as the squishy insides and furry hairstyles are still visible. The color allows us to really understand the biology of Neopets. Who would have thought Buzz had bones, but Ruki don’t!

There are 44 species currently available in this color, though it isn’t appropriate for Petpets. As a Paint Brush, try the Trading Post or the Vending Machine. The Transparent Morphing Potion is particularly spooky, and can be won from the Wheel of Excitement, or bought from Kauvara’s Magic Shop. The Secret Lab Ray might accidentally turn on X-Ray mode permanently too.
4Toy Paint Brush
In a similar vein to the Plushie Paint Brush is the Toy Paint Brush, with some species being even fluffier and cuter than their Plushie counterpart, like Kougra and Lupe. Many Neopets are based on real life toys, with Bori being a xylophone, Lenny a rubber ducky, and Grundo as the little alien from Toy Story.
The variety and attention to detail this Brush gives makes it one of the best Paint Brushes available. You can paint 35 species in this color, and you can get it randomly from the usual avenues, like the Secret Lab Ray, a random event, the Vending Machine, or a Faerie quest. The best species to paint Toy is arguably Gnorbus.

3Baby Paint Brush
Our Neopets are our babies, whether you adopted them back when the site needed a dial up connection, or since Flash Player Plugin was discontinued. The Baby Paint Brush perfectly captures how we feel about these cuties, with their big eyes and even bigger ears, especially Grundos.

You can’t dress Baby Neopets up in regular clothes, but some species come ready with their own little accessories, like diapers and onesies. As there are a few Neopets that are based on real animals, they appear as the baby form of those animals. Baby Pteris are little eggs. Buzz are larvae, and Nimmo are adorable tadpoles. The Baby Paint Brush can be bought from the Hidden Tower, and there was once a Random Event where Boochi the Bruce would zap your active Neopet, babyfying them instantly!
2Invisible Paint Brush
Somehow the Invisible Paint Brush is one of the best colors out there, as the customization options are just wild! It’s such a shame that Invisible Neopets are not eligible for the Pet Spotlight, despite the creativity that goes into dressing Neopets up like this.
Some fun ideas for those who want to push the boat out: Magical Markings which can then be dyed by Loic, whimsical Sparkling Faerie Wings, or a Delicate Earth Faerie Wand to appear extra mystical. Get this fun look through the Water Fountain, the Secret Lab Ray, or a Random Event.

1Candy Paint Brush
The number one Paint Brush is Candy. Not only have digital animals never looked so delicious, but each one is unique, and based on real candy. Candy Gorbu and Tonu look like fluffy cotton candy, Poogles are dipped in chocolate, and Gelerts are covered in hundreds and thousands!
The designs are so beautiful and realistic, and so much fun, that it’s hard to argue a better color line. There are 41 Candy Neopets to choose from, and that can be from the Water Fountain Faerie, the Lab Ray, or Vending Machine.
