Nintendohas revealed a limited edition Nintendo Switch OLED that’s planned to release beforeSuper Mario Bros. Wonderon October 5, but it’s one that’s disappointingly simple.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything new on Super Mario Bros. Wonder, but that’s just changed thanks to Nintendo releasing a special Direct presentation that gave us a ton of new details on the game. Not only did we learn more details about the powerups, enemies, and thenew badges mechanic, but we also got confirmation of the rumoured Nintendo Switch OLED that’s planned to release before the game’s launch.

Rumours of the limited edition Switch started popping up yesterday from trusted insider billbil-kun, who reported that it was planned for release before the game and that it wasn’t going to be anything too intricate. That turned out to be exactly the case, as Nintendo confirmed and showed off the OLED towards the end of the Direct, revealing that it’s going to be released on October 5.

Despite Super Mario Bros. Wonder having a very distinct art style that’s different from anything else we’ve seen in Mario games so far, the design of the Switch is incredibly basic and is basically just a red OLED. There aresomeunique design choices for it, such as the coins on the back and the slightly darker red Mario symbol in the bottom left, but it’s still surprisingly basic.

Just take a look back at the OLED consoles that we got for Splatoon 3 and Tears of the Kingdom and you’ll find yourself disappointed that Nintendo didn’t go the extra mile here. Sure, red is a colour that’s synonymous with Mario, but he’s not the only character in the game and it’s a shame to not see any unique elements from Wonder or any of its other characters represented here.

In fact, the OLED Switcheven seems like a step down from the regular Mario Switch that was released two years ago. That one wasn’t an OLED and is honestly isn’t much of a looker with the garishly bright blue and red pattern, but at least it was trying a little harder than this one. If you prefer simpler designs and just want a new OLED to go along with Wonder, then it’s not such a big deal, but it’s weird to see something so simple for such a striking game.

If you are interested in the OLED Switch,pre-orders for it have just gone live on the Nintendo Store. It’ll run you back $350 and is aiming to be released on October 5, a few weeks before Wonder launches.
