The collaboration between Pokemon and the Van Gogh Museum has been a disaster,at least for anyone wanting to pick up some merch legitimately. The event was meant to last until January next year, but all of the merch has already sold out both online and in-person. Worse yet, scalpers are now cashing out, trying to flog theirPokemoncards and other merchandise on eBay for hundreds of dollars at a time.

The most sought-after item by far is the promo card, Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat, which is selling for well over $500 on its own. The bidding wars for these cards are brutal, locking any casual fans out of adding it to their collection. One recently sold for an eyewatering $585 - with another $169 slapped on for import fees if you’re abroad.

While it wasn’t initially clear if scalpers were truly to blame for the chaos at the Van Gogh Museum, it’s now safe to assume that they were. Some sellers on eBay have multiple cards and items of merch available to buy in a single listing, much more than you’d pick up if you were just a hobbyist. Clearly, many descended upon the store just to grab as much as they could for resale online.

While nothing beats the price of the card, items as simple as tote bags are being sold for $75. Elsewhere, the Pikachu/Van Gogh plush toy is $99, pricing many of us out of the collection. One fan who was there, Reddit user Vulkanized, revealsthat it wasn’t just merch being scalped either, as some attendees were reselling their entry tickets for double the original price. They also say that they saw scalpers at the event with a bag full of promo cards, easily depleting the museum’s stock.

Due to this, The Pokemon Company has issued an apology to anyone hoping to pick up some merch for themselves. It said it is “actively working” on getting more copies of the promo card out in the wild, but there’s no note on the other items of merch that were sold at the museum. Clearly, there just wasn’t enough to carry the event through until January, at least when scapers are taken into account. More cards will at least take the wind out of their sails, and hopefully, make their $500 eBay listings utterly redundant.
