More than a decade on from its launch,Skyrimis still wowing RPG fans like you with just how much it can draw you in. It’s easy to say that the game is a masterpiece, but its many rereleases already speak for themselves, so instead, it’s worth pointing out all the breaks from the game world that are in the game.

There a tons of fantastic characters and NPCs throughout Skyrim, but a solid bunch of them are ready to remind you that you’re playing a fantasy RPG. Whether it’s due to an over-the-top expositor, a character that is classic fantasy, or someone who’s just plain odd, there are lots of times Skyrim reminds me that I’m still playing a video game.
10The Guards
Let’s be honest here, the many stylish guardsof Skyrim are in a whole different class of their own. These guys practically run into you just to deliver some of the most iconically cheesy lines ever written in the goofiest way possible, and we’re all absolutely here for it.
With that said, as soon as I see these guys, I’m waiting for the arrow to the knee line or the classic and unnecessarily sassy line about someone stealing my sweet roll. I don’t know who decided that these guards needed so much personality, and while it does take me out of the game, that is far from any kind of complaint.

9Grelod The Kind
Grelod The Kind is a darkly comedic character in Skyrim, though that certainly doesn’t include her actions. The name alone sets her up to be an angel, but everyone who’s played Skyrim knows just how vile this woman is to the unfortunate souls who end up under her care at the Riften orphanage.
Her actions are nothing to be laughed at, but how swiftly you’re able to bring justice upon this lady through cold-blooded murder, and the fact that the children will then come in and celebrate just makes me chuckle. It might be a realistic response in that situation, but the creepy laughter of the children absolutely reminds me of the ludicrously amazing game I’m playing.

8Ralof
Admittedly, Ralof really only reminds me of the fact that I’m playing a game because his opening line has absolutely been demolished by all the memes he’s been a part of. This funny Nord has plenty of redeeming qualities, but he’ll forever be remembered for the very beginning of Skyrim and nothing else.

It could be seen as a good or bad thing, but all the creativity people have put into that classic “You’re finally awake,” moment is pure gold. It pulls me out of the game so much that I forget my character is actively on his way to being executed.
7Cicero
Cicero is one of the most memorable characters from Skyrim and one of the best parts ofthe ever-twisting Dark Brotherhood questline, but the bizarre jester pulls me out of the game each time he speaks. He’s just so over-the-top and stereotypically evil that the entire quest line becomes a bit predictable from the first moment you meet him.
He sounds just unhinged enough to remind you of a cartoon character, and not necessarily in a good way. In a game that strives to be immersive, Cicero was a bit of an odd swing, even if he does end up being one of the better characters featured throughout.

6Lydia
As far as followers go, Lydia might just be one of the most memorable in the base game. Thanks to a fairly simple questline, she becomes bound to your character and forced to carry all of the equipment you don’t want to – I mean – she’ll carry your burdens.
Her dialogue is just so on the nose that it hurts. I don’t need someone to comment about how much I must really need something when my Skyrim character nicks a wheel of cheese — it just reminds me that I am in fact being followed around by a silly, albeit reliable, NPC.

5Babette
A young girl, an assassin, and a vampire all walk into a bar, the only problem is that the only one to actually walk in is Babette. This strange girl you’ll meet throughout the Dark Brotherhood events is just a strange reminder you’re playing a game.
Her personality isn’t as outrageous as some of the others on this list, but it is always bizarre to see a child vampire. She also just so happens to be a master of alchemy, though probably not the healing kind, causing me to have so many questions that I can’t help but be pulled from the game.

4Sheogorath
Any character that’s actually a Daedric prince is bound to be at least a little bit bizarre. Sheogorath goes ahead and jumps clean over the line marking a little bizarre and lands on one of the strangest characters in gaming.
The fact that Sheogorath is on vacation in the mind of a person is already strange, but combining that withthe fact that you get the Wabbajackand that you find him having tea just draws too many parallels to other media to ignore. Get in there, steal the guy’s cheese wheels, and gawk in awe of his two-toned suit.

3M’aiq The Liar
Good ole M’aiq the Liar has been kicking around in the series for far longer than anyone has actually needed him to. This goofy little liar is a joy anytime you see him, but all of the bizarre false facts he shares, and the fact that he speaks like The Rock really makes it clear he’s a game character.

Even though the liar claimed to have visited High Hrothgar, I’m inclined to believe him, because I’m sure he’d love to spread his ultra-specific brand of truth of the land below to all of the Greybeards.
2Ulfric Stormcloak
Ulfric Stormcloak is an important character in Skyrim, especially against the empire, but his importance might be a bit overplayed. While he is a ferocious foe in theory, the guy spends most of his time in what must be one of the most uncomfortable thrones of all time with a hand by his chin.
He can claim he’s busy all he wants, but he just sits there and waits for you to do all the running around. That’s without mentioning that he’d have been dead meat if it weren’t for you being up for execution.

1Nazeem
I’d bet most people will agree with this one considering Nazeem is really just the equivalent of a ye olde ’80s bully. He’s a jerk who thinks he’s far better than he actually is, despite no one of note ever mentioning him, and yet he still finds time to put the Dragonborn down.
It’s hilarious to follow him around as he interacts with the market he can be found near since everyone basically dismisses him as if they’re used to his attitude. He’s just such a random and unique character in the game that, the first time you meet him, you can’t believe you’re meeting someone like him.
