Series co-creator Ed Boon hints that some main characters will skipMortal Kombat 1, as the devs hope to “surprise” players. Speaking atGamescom, Boon says thatNetherRealmwants “some characters to have a break” in the upcoming game, suggesting that some series mainstays won’t make the roster this time around.

This comes asfans beg for Jade and Sonya to make the starting roster, disappointed to see two leading ladies skip this first game in a new timeline. Boon’s comments, however, suggest that not including them was a conscious decision, leaving room for lesser-used fighters to take their place.

Speaking withIGNat Gamescom, Boon discusses the thought process behind the main roster.

“We always have Scorpion, Sub Zero, Liu Kang, Raiden, Kitana, Mileena, […] so we always want some characters to have a break,” says Boon. “With starting over with Mortal Kombat 1 from the beginning, one of our goals was to have that surprise factor. ‘Oh, I haven’t seen Li Mei in forever. I haven’t seen this character in forever.’ So the 3D era is kind of our big agenda that we have there.”

This is great news for 3D-era fans since it shows that we can expect more to be brought back. Yet it’s bad news for the very dedicated Jade and Sonya supporters, who had hoped to get the pair in the main roster. So far, Sonya is just a kameo fighter, and Jade is only mentioned in a some dialogue.

Speaking of Jade, it seems that Boon is finding her fans a little too passionate. Later in the interview, he says that Jade is the “new Mileena”, referring to the campaign to get Mileena inMortal Kombat 11. Fans certainly took it too far back then, but Boon says that Jade stans might be even “louder”, so it might be best to leave him be. Yelling at him on Twitter probably isn’t going to change anything.

In fact, the starting roster would already have been decided by now, as Mortal Kombat 1 is set to launch on July 17, 2025. Of course, it’s possible that Jade, Sonya, and others will be added as DLC further down the line, but we’ll have to wait untilthe first wave of DLCis out of the way since we already know that this won’t include them. Instead, it will bring back Takeda, Ermac, and Quan Chi. Its guest fighters will be Homelander, Omni-Man, and Peacemaker, so we have a clear theme there.

Mortal Kombat 1 will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
