3DSonicgames had been treading water for a while. In fact, you might argue they had dipped below the surface and the blue blur was desperately looking for a bubble while the ominous countdown music from the original games played.Sonic Frontiersmay well have been that air bubble. Dubbedthe start of the third generation of Sonic games by Sega, you can now get Frontiers for almost half price, just in time forthe launch of its Final Horizon DLC.

Sonic fans have known story DLC was coming for a while asSega revealed its roadmap for Frontiers a while ago. Dropping in three parts, the studio provided more details about the Final Horizon expansion duringGamescom’s Opening Night Live. The DLC will make more of Frontiers' characters playable. The short trailer for what will presumably be the final chapter in Frontiers' story shows Sonic, with the backing of the rest of the game’s cast, rising up against a giant mech, the Chaos Emeralds seemingly giving him more power than they do when he’s just regular old Super Sonic.

The Final Horizon DLC, along with the other additional content added to Frontiers throughout 2023, is free. That means if you don’t already own a copy of the latest 3D Sonic game, there has never been a better time to pick one up. Usually retailing for $60, Frontiers is currently almost half that price onAmazon. WHERE TO PLAY

Sonic Frontiers drops you into a large open world for the first time in the series, with the aim of collecting the Chaos Emeralds scattered across the Starfall Islands. As always, you’ll have to content with Doctor Eggman and his dastardly plans.

Discounting the game this heavily is naturally what might well be one last push fromSegato get as many people to play Frontiers as possible. The Final Horizon launches on July 30, 2025, after which point it’s unclear whether Frontiers will receive any major updates at all. Sega will likely be focusing on whatever’s coming next after that, especially withSonic Superstarspushing through with its October 17 release date.

It wouldn’t have been a surprise to see Superstars move considering the company it’ll be keeping when it arrives next month.Spider-Man 2andSuper Mario Bros. Wonderboth launch three days after Superstars, and both will take a huge amount of attention away from Sonic’s next sidescroller. The future of 3D Sonic hasn’t yet been revealed, but since Frontiers is already the best-selling 3D Sonic game ever, it seems likely there will eventually be a sequel.
