Sonic Frontierswas met with pretty positive reviews across the board when it launched last year, but for all of the new open-world gameplay that stole the show, its best feature was, undoubtedly, the fishing minigame. Every single game is elevated by letting you chill and fish for a bit, breaking up the action with something far more laid back. Better yet, it brought back Big the Cat, who helped you fish while calming Lofi music filled the air. Perfection.

But now, it turns out that Big wasn’t there at all. The new Sonic Frontiers update, The Final Horizon, references this minigame and confirms that Sonic was on his own the whole time. He just imagined Big was there because he can remember fishing with him in the past, which is kind of sweet.

This revelation was spotted by Reddit user Star_Wyse, who shares a conversation between Sonic and Sage in the new update. Here, Sonic asks why the hell Big is just chilling in the purple portals dotted across the islands since there’s no real reason for him to be there anyway.

The answer is simple: he isn’t there. As Sage explains, the fishing areas aren’t actually real at all. Instead, they’re “a type of Cyber Space” created from Sonic’s memories of fishing in the past. As Sonic himself replies, at least this means that Big is actually safe and sound at his usual fishing spot, not in any mortal Cyber Space-related danger. It also might explain why the water always looked a little… glitchy, for lack of a better word.

Of course, the update does far more than address some fan curiosities. It also seems to be a response to fans complaining that the base game was too easy becauseit’s really, reallyturned up the difficulty. Too much, some might say, so be careful what you wish for. At long last, it makes Sonic’s pals playable at least, with Tails, Amy and Knuckles able to run around the open world. Knuckles even has his infamous infinite jump back from Sonic Boom, although it’s safe to assume that, like the original bug, this wasn’t intentional. Still, it makes it easier to reach higher platforms, and we’ll need all the help we can get with the update.

As the name would suggest, this is likely to be the final major update for Sonic Frontiers. After this, we’re moving on to the 2D game,Sonic Superstars. It remains to be seen if this is as much of a hit as Frontiers, and continues what could be a Sonic renaissance.
