Reviews for Sonic’s latest 2D adventure,Sonic Superstars, have dropped before the game’s official launch next week, and they seem to be generally positive overall.
This October is unarguably one of the busiest months in gaming over the past few years, with massive releases like Spider-Man 2, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Alan Wake 2, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder all happening within weeks, and sometimes days, of one another. Not content for Mario to be the only platforming icon of October, Sega’s Blue Blur also has a brand-new game releasing this month - Sonic Superstars, which launches on October 17.

Good news for all of you Sonic fans out there, as it looks like Superstars is mostly living up to expectations. Reviews for the game just dropped an hour ago and the response has been good so far, albeit with a few common complaints popping up between critics. As of the time of writing,Sonic Superstars currently sits with a “Fair” rating on OpenCriticand ascore of 74 on Metacritic, indicating generally positive reviews.
Let’s start off with our own review of the game first, which comes from Deputy News Lead and Sonic superfan, Rhiannon Bevan. In her review, Rhiannon gave Superstars a 3.5/5, and said that “Sonic Superstars has the makings of the definitive 2D Sonic game, but struggles to let go of the past”. Rhiannon was positive about Amy Rose’s inclusion in the game and the Emerald Powers being a great new addition, while she was less happy about the game’s lack of innovation and the fact that certain characters aren’t suited for specific levels.

One of the most positive reviews forSonic Superstars comes from GHLF, with Ryan Woodrow giving the game a 9/10 and positively comparing it to Sonic Mania, saying that Superstars brings the Blue Blur “into the modern era like never before”.VGC’s Chris Scullion was also positive about the game, giving Superstars a 4/5 and calling it “the Sonic 4 that fans deserve”, with particular praise going towards its rendition of 16-bit Sonic gameplay.
IGN’s Jade Griffin was a little more mixed on the titleand gave it a 7/10, noting that it lacked speed but giving credit to Superstars' “interesting” new ideas. Those new ideas weren’t so positively received byPush Square’s Stephen TailbyandVG247’s Alex Donaldson, however, as, while they both enjoyed the game overall, they both also settled on a 6/10 for it overall and specifically called out the Emerald Powers and co-op for dragging the game down overall and not always working with the 2D Sonic formula.
Overall, the reviews for Sonic Superstars are perhaps a little more mixed than fans of the series would like, but they’re still generally positive and indicate that the game is a good time, even if its new ideas don’t always compliment Sonic’s fast-paced 2D platforming quite as well as they should.
