Before the release ofSpider-Man 2, we found out that Insomniac included an optional fall damage toggle to add a little bit more danger and realism to swinging around New York. There were a few complaints at the time, with some worried that it might be a little too frustrating. All those worries seem to have faded now the game has released though, as fans are beginning to realize how funny it is watching Peter and Miles bounce off the concrete after jumping from the top of a skyscraper.

Head on over to Twitter and you’llfindcountlessvideosof players either accidentally slamming Peter or Miles into a car or building, or deliberately jumping from the top of the Avengers Tower just to see what happens. Most of them are rather funny, having Peter or Miles hit the floor and their body bounce around and land in a rather unnatural positions, while some have the poor Spider-Man in question crumple into a horrific shape, only to get back up again with their suit in tatters.

For the most part, this new addition of fall damage appears to be going down down a treat. It’s definitely a feature that harkens back to the sillier Spider-Man games, especially Spider-Man: Web of Shadows with its ridiculous QTE cutscenes, and the excellent Spider-Man 2 game for the PS2, which was considered to be the best Spidey had to offer before Insomniac came around.

In fact, some people are asking Insomniac to go even further with the fall damage for the next game. For example,a Twitter postabout Insomniac potentially adding an ability for players to climb their webs while swinging in Spider-Man 3 in response to a video about fall damage went semi-viral earlier today. Other suggestions in the replies to thread wished that Insomniac would allow players to adjust the height of their web swings so special sliding and grinding moves can be added.

Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that Insomniac would ever force fall damage onto players, so it probably wouldn’t be able to expand upon it in any meaningful way. For starters, even though it’s hilarious, it’s still quite a controversial feature, with some preferring no fall damage at all like the first game. Then you have the accessibility issues that would come with forced fall damage, as it would more than likely punish disabled gamers or those with slower reflexes.

We’ll undoubtedly see Insomniac build upon Spider-Man 2’s already excellent web-slinging mechanics if they decide to make a fourth game, though it seems like the developer isteasing a potential Venom spin-offas it’s next big project in the Spider-Man universe.
