Marvel’s Spider-Man 2is still a little over a month away, but a new round of previews has given us a whole lot more info about this new version of New York and what players can expect to do and find while zipping across the city. For example, we discovered that the backpack collectibles from both the first game and Spider-Man: Miles Morales have been removed in favor of small Spider-Bots that you can find throughout New York.

What makes them particularly interesting is that there seems to be quite a few that directly reference characters from the Spider-Verse movies. Content creator CabooseEKshared on Twitterthat they found a couple of Spider-Bots during one quest that seemed to reference Peni Parker and Spider-Gwen, both of which feature in the first Spider-Verse movie. After collecting a few, he then received a call from Ganke that said the signal from the collected bots were coming from “millions of miles away”.

Our very own Features Lead Jade King also managed to find some Spider-Bots that referenced certain characters during her time with the game too. These include little nods to both Spider-Noir and Spider-Man 2099, so we know that there will probably be some more references to the more recent Across the Spider-Verse as well. If you want to know more about what we think about Spider-Man 2 after our hands-on, you cancheck out Jade’s preview here.

It makes sense that Insomniac would put some references to the Spider-Verse movies in Spider-Man 2, especially when the Across the Spider-Verse had a couple of little nods to the game as well. Not only didInsomniac’s version of Peter Parker show up a couple of times during the movie, but you may also see Miles' best friend Gankeplaying an early version of Spider-Man 2during a scene in their dormitory room.

However, don’t go expecting anything more than little nods or brief cameos to other Spider-Man media in the game, as Insomniac has made it very clear it wants to tell its own story. This was made evident by narrative director Jon Paquette, who recently explained that even though they “entertain [the idea of] all the characters all the time”,Gwen Stacey will not feature in Spider-Man 2as she “isn’t part of our story”.
