Spider-Man 2’s review embargo has just lifted, revealing what critics thought of Insomniac’s hotly sought-after sequel. Spoilers, the reception is glowing.

At TheGamer, we gave it a 4.5/5, IGN gave it 8/10, Eurogamer gave it 4/5, Game Informer gave it 9.5/10, GamingBible gave it 9/10, while VG247 and VGC gave it a full five stars. High praise across the board, to put it lightly. At the time of writing, it has an average OpenCritic score of 91, with 100 percent of critics recommending it.

On Metacritic, it also has a score of 91, earning it the “Universal Acclaim” badge. The general sentiment is that it has meaningful choices, a slicker UI, vastly improved gameplay, and a gripping story. Our Editor-in-Chief Stacey Henley said that “it feels like Spider-Man has grown up”, moving away fromthe copagandawhile weaving a story that iterates on both Peter Parker and Miles Morales' games. Impressively, she even says that it manages to feel fresh despite the many adaptations we’ve had over the years, Spider-Verse included.

VGC says that it’s “one of the best games of 2023”, and staff writer Jordan Middler goes as far as to say that it’s"undoubtedly one of the best superhero games"of all time. In a year packed with heavy hitters, fromTears of the KingdomtoBaldur’s Gate 3, that’s a bold claim.

Stacey also made an appearance on the VGC podcast with Middler, GamingBible’s Ewan Moore, and accessibility consultant Laura Kate Magnet-Dale (who recentlypreviewed the PS5 accessibility controllerhere at TheGamer) to discuss Spider-Man 2. You can catch the podcast via the link below.
