InStarfield, there are three main types of armor, and they’re all quite appropriately space-flavored. You have your spacesuits, helmets, and your booster packs. We’ve got articles mulling over our favorites of each category, but as you’ve likely surmised simply through clicking, we’re here today to talk shop on helmets.

These are seven of our most enduring fully-featured head protectors. But remember, if you’d rather not look like a moonfarer while you’re wandering around your apartment on Neon or hanging out for drinks at The Rock, you can always set your options to disable the helmet from view when in safe zones!

6Mercury Space Helmet

The Mercury Helmet’s first up, since its Physical, Energy, and EM protective capabilities are good - but not great. Yet it makes up for that ‘mere goodness’ with 15s in all four environmental hazards, including Airborne, Corrosive, Radiation, and Thermal. This makes Mercury one of the finest bits of gear you’ll find in Starfield suitable for traipsing across far-flung worlds with rough weather conditions.

You can grab this, as well as the Mercury Spacesuit and Mercury Pack, during the main quest. It’s far into the game when you get here, but you’ll still want to snag it for future adventuring.

5Experimental Nishina Space Helmet

Available via the ‘Entangled’ main quest, the Experimental Nishina Space Helmet is similar to the Mercury Space Helmet in that its raw attributes aren’t stellar, but its environmental protection makes up for it. Apart from Airborne, everything’s gotsomething, and the inherent coolness of the helm’s design make it prime real estate for plugging in some of Starfield’s more fiendishly powerful mods.

4Mark I Space Helmet

The Mark I Space Helmet’s big three defensive attributes clock in at 66-64-68, with 20 for Thermal to protect you against harsh heat and the like. Solid stuff, to be sure, but what makes it shine is how ridiculously early on you can acquire it.

Once you’re at The Lodge, and you’ve met with your fellow Constellation members, placed that first artifact on its altar, done that whole song-and-dance, search the basement rooms. Toward the far side you’ll see this (with a matching spacesuit and pack) ‘locked’ inside a display case. But if you crouch and find the sweet spot, you may inexplicably take everything out without tapping the Master-tier lock, meaning you’ve got gearthisgood an hour into the game.

3Trackers Alliance Space Helmet

Bounty hunters don’t mess around, and if you’re a part of the Trackers Alliance, you’ll want superior head protection. We’re not quite sure why we started this list entry like a sales pitch, but here we are. The Trackers Alliance Helmet emphasizes the damage-lowering at the expense of mediocre environmental help, but with Physical, Energy, and EM ranging from 68 on the high end to 60 on the low, it makes for a great entry kit; mod it to shore up its weaknesses, and it’s fantastic.

2Bounty Hunter Space Helmet

And then there’s the space helmet with the words ‘Bounty Hunter’ right there on the tin, and it’s actually a bit better than the Trackers Alliance variant overall. Energy defense drops to 58, but Physical’s up to 72, EM’s 64, and it comes with a respectable 20 on Thermal and 10 for Radiation. It’s an all-around good one, unless Corrosive and Airborne damage are, for some reason, your primary threats.

The nicest thing about the Bounty Hunter Space Helmet, however, is its availability. Folks have reported plucking these from the remains of ordinary Spacer-type enemies, albeit at somewhat higher levels. Still, name a Starfield session filled with exploration that doesn’t result in at least one gunfight with either Ecliptic or Spacers.

1Old Earth Space Helmet

The Old Earth Helmet’s our pick for the best helmet in Starfield, at least as of this writing. Future support by Bethesda will likely up the ante, but for now, a helmet with 74 Physical Defense is simply top-tier. 58 Energy and 66 EM ensures you’ve got a balanced breakfast - er, headgear - wherever you may roam.

When it comes to helmet chatter, we realize it all boils down to numbers, but we’ve got another thing to say in the Old Earth Helmet’s honor - it looks good. If you’re not going to disable helmet visibility when in towns and other safe harbors, you’ll at least want to look cool with it on. Plus, isn’t there just an air of mystery to wandering the Settled Systems with something like this?
